Absa does not publish a separate “legal collections” number; if your Absa account is in arrears or you are facing legal action, call Absa’s debt assistance line on 0861 22 22 72. Absa Bank Limited routes customers who are struggling with debt through its “Manage my debt” help and the product area that holds the account, such as home loans, car finance or personal loans.

If you have received a letter of demand or a summons, use the reference and contact details printed on that letter, because they are specific to your account. For Absa’s other numbers, see the main Absa contact details page.

Official Absa debt and collections route

Absa’s “Manage my debt” page tells customers who need more help to call 0861 22 22 72 or visit their nearest branch. The Borrowing section of Absa’s contact page lists a “Manage my debt” line, 0860 000 786. To negotiate lower instalments, Absa refers customers to its product areas on 0860 62 76 27. For car finance in arrears, Absa’s vehicle finance debt page gives 0861 222 272.

You can also call the product line for the account concerned: home loans on 0860 111 007, car finance on 0860 669 669, and personal loans or overdrafts on 0860 100 372.

What you need before contacting Absa

Have your account number for the product in arrears ready, plus any letter of demand or summons you have received and its reference. Absa lists these warning signs of over-indebtedness: frequent collection calls, a letter or summons from creditors or lawyers, and judgments granted against you.

Timing matters. Absa advises going to a registered debt counsellor before legal action is taken, because agreements where a Section 130 summons has been issued are excluded from debt counselling. While you are in debt counselling and keep to the new repayment terms, credit providers cannot issue letters of demand or summonses or take other legal steps. Absa also offers a Solutions Account, a flat-fee basic account for customers under debt review.

Step-by-step contact process

  1. Call Absa’s debt assistance line on 0861 22 22 72, or the product area for the account in arrears, and ask about a more affordable repayment plan.
  2. If Absa cannot agree a lower instalment, contact a registered debt counsellor before legal action starts.
  3. If you already have a letter of demand or summons, quote the account number and reference on that letter when you call.
  4. If the matter is not resolved, take it to the Absa Complaint Resolution Suite on 0800 41 41 41 or actionline@absa.co.za.

Escalation route

Absa’s internal escalation is the Complaint Resolution Suite: call 0800 41 41 41 on weekdays from 08:00 to 16:30, or email actionline@absa.co.za. Write down who you spoke to and what was agreed at each step. Absa notes that credit record information can only be retained for seven years and six months.

For other banks and lenders, browse the banking and finance hub or the banking directory A listings.
