If you are behind on a loan or card, call your own bank’s arrears line: Standard Bank 086 100 1868, Absa 0860 000 786, Nedbank 0800 555 111 or Capitec 0860 10 20 43. There is no single “bank collections” organisation in South Africa; each bank runs its own collections and debt help, and the numbers below were read from each bank’s own website.

What you need before contacting

  • The account you are behind on (home loan, vehicle finance, credit card or personal loan)
  • Your ID number so the bank can identify you
  • A clear picture of what you can afford each month, so you can propose a payment arrangement

Step-by-step contact process

  1. Call your own bank’s arrears line from the table above before the account moves to legal collections.
  2. Ask for a payment arrangement or a debt relief solution. Standard Bank takes call-back requests online through its arrears page.
  3. With Standard Bank, you can also apply for debt relief solutions and a payment holiday online through the Debt Care Centre.
  4. If you cannot keep up with a home or vehicle loan, ask about selling it yourself. Standard Bank offers EasySell to help sell a financed home or vehicle for a better price than an auction.

Standard Bank warns that repossessed assets are sold at a sheriff’s auction, often below market value, which can leave you owing a shortfall. That is why it urges customers to make an arrangement early.

Escalation route

If a collections problem is not resolved, lodge a complaint through your bank’s own complaints channel and keep the reference number. See our banks hub for each bank’s contact pages.
