MFC is the vehicle and asset finance division of Nedbank, so the email addresses split between the two domains. Arrangements sit with the collections restructures mailbox on the mfc.co.za side.

What arrangements MFC offers

  • A payment plan on arrears. MFC says you can call Nedbank Collections on 0801 114 949 to pay the arrear amount over a few months, usually no more than three.
  • A restructure of the contract to raise or lower the instalment. This needs credit approval first, and is arranged by emailing collections.res@mfc.co.za or calling 0801 114 949.
  • A payment freeze of up to three months where you have lost your income through dismissal, retrenchment, unpaid maternity leave or suspension, subject to conditions.
  • A balloon or residual restructure before it falls due, over 6, 12, 18, 24 or 36 months. MFC says it sends a quotation three months beforehand.
  • A shortfall restructure after an auction, over a maximum of 36 months, with credit approval.

For the freeze, MFC lists the documents to send with your written request: a letter setting out what you are asking for, plus a retrenchment letter, an unpaid maternity leave letter, a doctor’s note, a UIF letter showing unemployment or incapacity, or a police affidavit, whichever applies.

What a freeze actually costs

MFC is explicit about two consequences. The months you freeze are added to the end of the repayment period, which increases the total interest and may push the instalment up slightly. And an account in arrears still shows on your MFC payment profile and at the credit bureaus, which can affect you later.

It also says its mandate once an account defaults is to collect the arrears within 15 days, so the arrangement is worth asking for before the letters start rather than after.

Paying and changing your debit order

  • The standard method is a debit order, and MFC says you may not cancel it while the finance is running. If your banking details change, give MFC the new ones.
  • You can also pay cash at any Nedbank branch or by internet transfer. Take the MFC banking details from the MFC website itself, and always use your account number as the reference.
  • To change your instalment date, use the Nedbank Money app or Online Banking under Features, then Manage payment details. If you change it fewer than seven working days before the current instalment date, the change only takes effect the following month.
  • Certain payments only reflect after 48 hours, which is why MFC sometimes sends an SMS about an overdue amount you have already paid.

What to put in the email

  • Your MFC account number and the vehicle registration in the subject line.
  • What you are asking for in one sentence: a payment plan on arrears, a restructure of the instalment, or a freeze.
  • What you can realistically pay each month, and from when. A number you can hold to is worth more than a promise you cannot.
  • The supporting documents listed above, attached rather than promised.
  • Ask for written confirmation of the arrangement, and keep paying the agreed amount on the agreed date; a missed arrangement payment usually ends the arrangement.

Charges that appear once an account falls behind include arrear interest, collection costs where the account is handed to an external collector, valuation costs, dealer stock costs after repossession and storage costs, so an arrangement made early is materially cheaper than one made late.

If you cannot keep the vehicle

MFC sets out two routes. You can sell the vehicle privately for the best price and settle the account, with its assisted sales service on 0801 114 949 available to help. Or you can voluntarily surrender it, in which case it is valued and sold on auction, you remain liable for any shortfall, and you are listed with the credit bureaus until the balance is settled.

Ask which of the two leaves you better off before you hand anything back, because the shortfall after an auction is usually larger than the gap on a private sale.
