To make a GEPF claim, call the Government Employees Pension Fund toll-free on 0800 117 669 (+27 80 011 7669 from abroad) or email enquiries@gepf.co.za, then hand in the claim form at a GEPF office or send it to your provincial enquiries mailbox. GEPF is the pension fund for South African public servants, and its walk-in offices and regional mailboxes are run by the Government Pensions Administration Agency (GPAA).

There is no separate claims line. Funeral, death, spouse and child pension, unclaimed, resignation and retirement claims all go through the same call centre, email and offices. For GEPF’s general numbers, see the main GEPF contact details page.

Official GEPF claims route

Start on gepf.co.za: find the benefit you are claiming and download its form. Questions about a claim go to the toll-free call centre on 0800 117 669 or to enquiries@gepf.co.za. GEPF lists its business hours as 07:30 to 16:00.

You can hand in forms at a GEPF or GPAA office, or email your provincial enquiries mailbox:

GEPF deals with clients directly and does not charge for its services. It does not endorse agents, and anyone charging you a fee to help you claim is committing fraud.

What you need before contacting GEPF

The documents depend on the benefit:

  • Funeral benefit: a fully completed Z300 funeral benefit claim form, a certified death certificate, certified copies of the IDs of the deceased and of the applicant, and a Z894 banking details form. If you send the claim by fax, add a certified bank statement.
  • Spouse’s annuity: the certified ID of the deceased, proof of the marriage or customary union, a Z894 form, a certified death certificate and your own certified ID.
  • Unclaimed benefits: a Z894 banking details form, a certified ID not older than six months and an updated Z864 personal details form. Beneficiaries also need the member’s death certificate.

The funeral benefit is a taxable cash lump sum of R20 000 for a member, pensioner or spouse. GEPF accepts funeral claims in this order of preference: the member, the pensioner, the spouse, a major child, the guardian of a minor child, a parent or parent-in-law, a sibling or sibling-in-law, and then the executor.

A benefit counts as unclaimed when it has not been paid within 24 months of the member’s last day of service. When a member dies in service, the benefit is paid to the nominated beneficiaries or, if there are none, to the estate. If a pensioner dies within five years of retiring, the beneficiaries receive the balance of the five-year annuity as a lump sum.

Step-by-step GEPF claim process

  1. Identify the benefit you are claiming (funeral, death, spouse or child pension, unclaimed, resignation or retirement) on gepf.co.za and download its form.
  2. Complete the form and attach the certified documents listed above for that benefit.
  3. Submit the claim at a GEPF or GPAA office, or through your provincial enquiries mailbox.
  4. Ask questions about your claim on 0800 117 669 or at enquiries@gepf.co.za.
  5. Report anyone who demands a fee to help you claim to the Fraud Helpline on 0800 203 900.

GEPF aims to process a funeral benefit claim within 5 days of receiving it. Incomplete or incorrect documents delay payment, so check every certified copy before you submit.

Escalation route

GEPF does not publish a separate escalation line for claims. Follow up through the call centre, enquiries@gepf.co.za or your provincial office, and keep copies of everything you submitted. Fraud, including agents charging a fee, goes to the Fraud Helpline on 0800 203 900 or by SMS to 30916.

For other pension funds and financial institutions, browse the banking and finance hub or the banking directory F to I listings.
