GEPF’s walk-in offices are run by the Government Pensions Administration Agency (GPAA), which administers the fund, so the regional email addresses below end in @gpaa.gov.za. Each province has its own enquiries mailbox; the named contact people GEPF lists are left out here because they change.
GEPF claims contact details
GEPF claims enquiries go to the toll-free Call Centre on 0800 117 669. GEPF does not publish a separate claims email address. Claim forms are on gepf.co.za, or you can get them from the Call Centre or any GEPF regional office. GEPF asks members not to reply to its SMS or email notifications and to call the Call Centre instead.
GEPF funeral claim contact details
Fax funeral benefit claims to 012 319 3655. GEPF says this fax number is for funeral benefit claims only. You can also hand a funeral claim in at any GEPF regional office listed below. GEPF pays a taxable cash lump sum of R20 000 towards funeral costs for a member, pensioner or spouse, and it is also payable on the death of an eligible child. Wherever possible GEPF processes a funeral benefit claim within 5 days of receiving it; incomplete or incorrect forms delay payment.
Documents for a funeral benefit claim:
- The completed Z300 Funeral Benefit Claim Form with its checklist
- A certified copy of the death certificate
- Certified copies of the ID of the deceased and of the claimant
- The Z894 banking details form (plus a certified bank statement if you fax the claim)
Write the member’s or pensioner’s pension number and “Funeral Benefit Claim” in the top right-hand corner of every page. GEPF pays into a bank account or through an online Post Office payment, which must be collected within 30 days. Payment waits for a SARS tax directive.
GEPF claims process for retirement, resignation and death
Retirement and resignation claims go through your employer, not straight to GEPF. For normal retirement, give your Human Resources department a Z102 Withdrawal from Fund form, a Z894 banking details form, a Z583 form (if you have 10 or more years of service and are on medical aid), a certified copy of your ID not older than six months and a Retirement Choice form. HR completes the rest and submits the claim to GEPF. Early retirement is possible from age 55 with your employer’s written permission, and HR also needs a letter of approval signed by the Head of Department.
Death benefits are paid when a member dies in service or within five years of becoming a pensioner; qualifying spouses and eligible children receive annuities. A spousal annuity claim needs a certified copy of the deceased’s ID, proof of marriage or customary union and a Z894 banking details form.
GEPF claims online
GEPF does not offer online claim submission on its site. Claims are lodged on paper forms: funeral claims by fax or at a regional office, retirement claims through your employer’s HR department. You can trace a claim online through GEPF Self-Service (see below).

GEPF offices near me: East London, Potchefstroom and Port Elizabeth
GEPF lists 16 walk-in offices and none of them is in East London or Potchefstroom. In the Eastern Cape the offices are Mthatha, Bisho and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), all on ECPEnquiries@gpaa.gov.za. In North West they are Rustenburg and Mafikeng, on NorthWest.Enquiries@gpaa.gov.za. GEPF self-service
The GEPF self-service queries number is 012 319 1400 (for self-service queries only), and the support email is selfservicesupport@gpaa.gov.za. The main self-service channel is the GEPF Self-Service app, on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and the Self-Service Login on gepf.co.za. GEPF says the app lets you keep track of your policy and make changes at any time of day. Self-service lets members trace claims and retirement benefits, see benefit statements and tax certificates, update contact details and nominate beneficiaries. About GEPF and who administers it
GEPF’s FAQ describes the Government Employees Pension Fund as an independent pension fund that manages pensions and related benefits for government employees. It is a separate legal entity, not a government institution, and was established in May 1996 when the Government Employees Pension Law came into force. It is a defined benefit fund: benefits follow the rules of that law and depend on your years of service and final salary, not on how the fund’s money is invested. A Board of 16 trustees governs the fund.
GEPF does not do its own administration. The Government Pensions Administration Agency (GPAA), a government component that reports to the Minister of Finance, administers the fund’s benefits under a service level agreement. That is why the walk-in offices above are GPAA offices. GEPF’s site also has sections for pensioners on life verification, pension increases and pension payment dates, and for members on retirement, resignation, funeral, death, divorce and unclaimed benefits and the two-pot system.
