IntelliMali WhatsApp, USSD and toll-free numbers
IntelliMali’s Talk to Us page lists one phone number, 087 2300 161, and two email addresses. No WhatsApp number, USSD code or toll-free 0800 number appears on its website, FAQ or login page. The 087 number is not toll-free; it is charged at normal rates. IntelliMali’s FAQ does mention Live Chat as one of its Talk to Us options. Be wary of WhatsApp numbers or USSD codes claiming to be IntelliMali that ask for your student number, PIN or card details, and use the login portal or the official number and emails instead.
My IntelliMali login
My IntelliMali, at my.intellimali.co.za, has separate login options for students and individuals, and for institutions, funders and merchants. Students who have forgotten their PIN can use “Forgot PIN” to request a PIN and check for allowances. IntelliMali’s FAQ says each type of user has their own online portal with a unique username and password: recipients can view balances and statements, disable their card or update their details; merchants can view a transactions report for a date range; and funders can view recipients’ balances and change details instantly. Sponsors and merchants can register from the login page.
What this organisation provides
What IntelliMali does
IntelliMali is a privately owned company, established in 2009 to meet third-party payment requirements for South African higher education institutions, which has since grown into other industries. It says it is 51% black-owned with Level 2 B-BBEE status. Students can spend food, book, accommodation, data and travel allowances at participating stores and online platforms. Other customers can load money onto an IntelliMali wallet by EFT, Pay@, cash deposits or vouchers, and spend it in stores, online, on bills, airtime and data, or send it to another IntelliMali wallet holder. Employers use the platform to pay wages and stipends to staff without active bank accounts.
For funders and merchants
Funders and institutions that want to use IntelliMali should contact it through the Talk to Us page; IntelliMali says it will visit to give a demonstration and train administrators on the Funder Portal. Merchants are usually added when a funder or institution lists them, but can also ask IntelliMali directly to join its preferred merchants list by emailing merchants@intellimali.co.za. Merchants can accept payments through IntelliPos (an app), IntelliScan (QR code) or a swipe-and-PIN card terminal, and IntelliMali provides technical support for hardware and software issues.
Address and operating information
IntelliMali’s PAIA manual, last updated in December 2020, gives the company’s registered name as Intellimali (Pty) Ltd and its physical address as 8 Victoria Road, Plumstead, Cape Town, 7800. The manual also lists an older telephone number, 087 943 2339; use the current Talk to Us number, 087 2300 161, first.
IntelliMali working hours
IntelliMali does not publish working hours for its phone line on its website. The My IntelliMali portal is online, so you can check your balance, statements and allowances, and disable a lost card, at any time.
Support and escalation routes
For questions that need a person, call 087 2300 161 or email info@intellimali.co.za with your name, student or ID number, institution and a description of the problem. For allowance amounts or delays, your funder or institution’s financial aid office decides what is loaded, so contact them as well.
Lost IntelliCard
IntelliMali’s FAQ explains that IntelliCard, its “intelligent card”, does not store its intelligence on a chip. Instead it accesses a database on web-based servers, which means IntelliMali can suspend a lost card and top up allowances remotely. Recipients can disable their own card in the online portal, so if your card is lost or stolen, log in to my.intellimali.co.za and disable it, then contact IntelliMali about a replacement.
