Nedbank publishes no telephone number or mailbox for a legal department. What it does publish is a formal complaints path with an appeal stage, which is the route a legal or dispute matter actually travels.

Task scope

A legal department at a bank acts for the bank, not for its clients, which is why no public line exists. The matters people expect a legal department to handle, such as disputed debits, account closures or conduct complaints, go through the complaints path instead.

Route

The helpline runs Monday to Friday from 08:00 rather than around the clock, unlike the main contact centre. The appeals mailbox is a second stage, used after the helpline has given a decision you disagree with.

Requirements

Have the complaint reference from the first call before using the appeals mailbox. Reports of unethical or corrupt conduct are deliberately routed away from the bank to an independent line, Tip-offs Anonymous, which also takes reports at [email protected].

Steps

Work through the helpline first, then the appeals mailbox, and only then to an external body. Nedbank sets that order out itself, and an ombud will normally ask whether the bank has been given a chance to resolve the matter before taking it up.

Escalation

Banks fall within the jurisdiction of the National Financial Ombud Scheme, on 0860 800 900. Complaints about financial advice or intermediary services go instead to the FAIS Ombud on 0860 663 274, and credit matters to the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627.
