Gamblers Anonymous South Africa is a volunteer fellowship of people helping each other stop gambling, run on a 12-step model. It publishes regional hotlines staffed by members and lists in-person and online meetings. It is separate from the National Responsible Gambling Programme, which runs a free professional counselling line 24 hours a day. This page covers both. The fellowship’s hotlines are answered by volunteers from 08:00 to 21:00 daily. GA says its volunteers will not phone you back, because a return call could cause problems at home, so keep trying if you do not get through. Its email replies may be slow.

What this organisation provides

Gamblers Anonymous says the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop gambling, and members do not have to hold any particular religious belief. Its website lists weekly meetings:

  • Gauteng: meetings on Tuesday to Thursday evenings in Midrand, Boksburg, Randburg, Faerie Glen in Pretoria, Bryanston and Kempton Park
  • KwaZulu-Natal: meetings in Phoenix, Chatsworth, Overport, Pietermaritzburg, Verulam and a Saturday morning meeting in Umhlanga
  • Online: Zoom meetings most evenings, including a women-preferred meeting on Fridays and an “All Africa” meeting on Sundays

The National Responsible Gambling Programme, run by the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, offers free treatment, counselling and self-exclusion from gambling venues and sites. It says it has treated more than 18 500 people, and its website has a digital referral form for gamblers, family members and self-exclusion.

Meeting venues and times are listed on gamblersanonymous.org.za and change from time to time, so check the current list before going. The NRGP’s office is at Sentinel House, Sunnyside Office Park, 32 Princess of Wales, Parktown, Johannesburg, on 011 026 7323; callers from outside South Africa can use +27 21 674 5830.

Support and escalation routes

If you or someone close to you is in crisis about gambling debt or losses, call the NRGP’s toll-free line on 0800 006 008 at any hour; it is free and confidential. Gamblers Anonymous meetings are free too. Nobody legitimate charges a fee to join GA or to be put through to a counsellor.
