There are three organisations behind the South African National Lottery and they answer different questions. Sending your question to the wrong one is the usual reason it goes unanswered.
Start on the lottery site itself
nationallottery.co.za carries the draw games, Matchplay, E-Instant and scratch cards, plus Results and a ticket Checker, an account login, FAQs, and sections on How to Play, Responsible Play, Player Protection, Fairness Assurance and Support Resources. There is also a mobile app that scans a ticket to check it. For a result, an account or a game rule, that is faster than any phone call.
The one number to keep
- Call centre: 086 102 6000
- Email: [email protected]
That reaches the licensed operator. It also runs an office in each region for retailer and trade matters; those are listed separately on our Sizekhaya Holdings page rather than repeated here, because a player almost never needs one.
Operator, regulator, or fund
- The operator sells the tickets, runs the draws and pays the prizes. A dispute about a ticket, a claim, an account or a retailer belongs here.
- The National Lotteries Commission is the statutory regulator. It licenses the operator and takes complaints about it. Regulator, not shopfront.
- Good cause funding is administered through the NLC, not by the operator. If you are an organisation applying for a lottery grant, the operator cannot help you at all.
Claiming a prize
- Sign the back of the ticket immediately. An unsigned ticket belongs to whoever is holding it.
- Smaller prizes are paid at a retailer or into a registered player account. Larger ones are paid at an office, and you should phone before travelling.
- Prizes expire after a set period from the draw date and are then forfeited. Do not sit on a winning ticket.
- Take your identity document and the original ticket. A photograph of a ticket is not a ticket.
Nobody phones to tell you that you have won
This is the most common fraud attached to the lottery in South Africa. The pattern never changes: you are told you have won a draw you never entered, then asked for a release fee, a courier charge, a tax payment or your banking details. You cannot win a lottery you did not enter, and a genuine prize is never conditional on you paying anything. Winners are not announced by SMS or WhatsApp from a private number. If a message worries you, phone 086 102 6000 yourself, on the number above rather than any number the message supplies.
Two variants worth naming. One asks you to pay tax before the prize is released — South African lottery prizes are not taxed that way and no tax is ever collected by the person paying you. The other sends a cheque or a proof of payment and asks you to forward part of it; the payment reverses later and the money you sent is gone.
Playing responsibly
- You must be 18 or over.
- The site publishes Responsible Play and Player Protection sections, and a Fairness Assurance page explaining how draws are audited.
- If gambling has stopped being a game, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation runs a free confidential counselling line independent of any operator.
