Landis+Gyr makes a large share of the prepaid electricity meters installed in South African homes, including the Cashpower range. It has no South African office. Its own site locator lists eighteen locations across Europe, North and South America, Asia and Oceania, and not one of them is in Africa.

Do not phone the manufacturer about your meter

A Landis+Gyr meter belongs to whoever supplies your electricity, not to Landis+Gyr. The manufacturer cannot see your account, cannot issue a token, cannot change a tariff and cannot send a technician. Every one of those is done by the utility that installed the meter.

• A token that will not load, a meter showing an error code, a tamper alert or a blank screen: your municipality or metro electricity department, or Eskom if Eskom bills you directly.
• A token not received after payment: the vendor you bought it from — the bank app, retailer or online vendor — who can resend it from the transaction record.
• A meter that needs replacing after the twenty-year key-change deadline: the utility, which manages the rollover programme, not the manufacturer.

The 20-digit token is generated against the meter’s own number, so the meter number printed on the unit is the reference to quote, not the account number on your bill.

There is a landisgyr.co.za domain, but it serves no website — it is registered through a brand-protection registrar and parked. Treat any site or number presenting itself as “Landis+Gyr South Africa” with caution and check it against landisgyr.com first.

Buying a meter or spares

Landis+Gyr sells to utilities and to approved distributors rather than to the public, and its site carries a distribution finder for that purpose. South African electrical wholesalers do stock Landis+Gyr units, but a meter bought over the counter still has to be registered and configured by the utility before it will accept tokens. Fitting one yourself is both a tampering offence and a reason for the utility to refuse to vend to it.
