Every branch lists the same email address, info@matus.co.za. There is no durban@ or branch-specific mailbox.

That makes the phone number the only thing that routes you to Durban. If you email, put “Durban” in the subject line, otherwise your message lands in a shared inbox with no indication of which branch you need.

There are four branches, not three

A small inconsistency worth knowing if you are in the Eastern Cape.

Matus describes itself on its own site as having branches in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Its contact page, on the same site, lists those three plus Port Elizabeth, with a full address and two telephone numbers.

The Port Elizabeth branch is real as far as the published contact details go. The summary line simply has not been updated. So do not assume from the description that you have to deal with Cape Town or Johannesburg from the Eastern Cape.

Port Elizabeth is also the only branch with two numbers, which is useful when one is engaged.

Sales and support share one number

Matus lists Sales and Support separately on its contact page, which suggests two desks. Both entries give the same number, 011 681 9100, and the same hours.

So there is no separate technical support line to ask for. Say at the start of the call whether you are buying or have a problem with something you already own.

Note that 011 681 9100 is the Johannesburg head office number. For a Durban matter, 031 580 3400 is the direct route and avoids being transferred.

Two broken links on their own site

Both are worth knowing because both look like your mistake rather than theirs.

The WhatsApp button does not work. The icon on the contact page links to wa.me followed by the local landline number, written with spaces. WhatsApp links need a number in full international format with no spaces or symbols, so this one cannot open a chat. There is no working WhatsApp channel published, and the number behind the icon is a landline in any case.

The online store link is malformed. The “for member purchases, please visit our online store” link on the contact page does not point at a web address at all. It points at what looks like a personal email address, entered as though it were a website. Clicking it will not take you to a store. We are not reproducing that address, because it is a personal mailbox and it is plainly there by mistake.

What Matus actually sells

Matus is a wholesale distributor of tools and power tools across Southern Africa, and it says it carries more than 220 brands with nationwide delivery.

Its own house brands are the ones you are most likely to be calling about, because warranty and repair questions on these come back to Matus rather than to a third party: Fox, Matair, Matweld, Matsafe, Fascor, Kendo, Eclipse and Mobi Jack. It also distributes HiKOKI.

This matters for who to phone. A fault on a Matweld or Matsafe product is a Matus matter. A fault on a brand it merely stocks may route to that manufacturer’s own agent.

Matus publishes separate warranty and repairs, returns and credit policies on its site, and runs a returns, service and credit request process. Read the policy before phoning, because the branch will ask which of the three you are lodging.
