PMI is four different South African organisations, so the right contact depends on which one you mean. The training provider with a Durban branch, Production Management Institute of Southern Africa, is on head office line 031 201 1260 with its Durban branch at 305 Musgrave Road, Strathmore Park. The Project Management Institute chapter is on 010 020 1900. They share nothing but three letters.

PMI Durban: Production Management Institute of Southern Africa

  • Head office: 031 201 1260, info@pmi-sa.co.za
  • A second number, 010 800 0000, appears in the footer of the same site
  • Head office address: Adcorp Place, 102 Western Service Road, Gallo Manor Ext 6, Johannesburg
  • Durban branch: 305 Musgrave Road, Strathmore Park
  • Other branches: Johannesburg, Bellville, Gqeberha (33 CJ Langenhoven Drive, Newton Park), Uitenhage and East London
  • Website: pmi-sa.co.za

Note the two numbers: a Durban code on the head office line and an 010 number in the footer, both published by them. Try the 031 one first. This PMI is a training provider: registration number 1997/018146/07, registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a private higher education institution under registration certificate 2000/HE07/011. Its own site carries a scam warning telling people to check that a learnership or qualification is with an accredited provider, and the registration numbers above are what you check it against.

PMI South Africa Chapter, the Project Management Institute

This is the one most people mean by PMI. It is the South African chapter of the global Project Management Institute, and it handles chapter membership, PMP and other certifications, professional development units and volunteering. Its enquiry form routes by reason: volunteering, membership registration, certification, membership renewal, PDU questions. Pick the reason rather than using Other.

PMI Africa, balanced scorecard and KPI training

A separate training business again, focused on balanced scorecard and KPI certification rather than project management. It is easy to reach this one while looking for the Project Management Institute; the giveaway is the word scorecard.

PMI Ltd, marine and construction

  • South Africa: 021 880 1140, info@pmi-ltd.co.za
  • Address: PMI Construction Services SA, 19 Quantum Street, Techno Park, Stellenbosch; Suite 162, Private Bag X4, Die Boord, 7613
  • Ghana: +233 30 278 5796. United Kingdom: +44 753 963 8982. All three use the same mailbox.
  • Website: pmi-ltd.co.za

Marine construction, engineering services, project management, and surveys and site investigations, with vessels and barges. Nothing to do with the other three.

How to tell the four PMIs apart in one line

  • A certification, a chapter membership or PDUs: pmi.org.za.
  • A learnership, a qualification or a SETA-accredited course: pmi-sa.co.za.
  • Balanced scorecard or KPI training: pmiafrica.co.za.
  • A marine or construction contract: pmi-ltd.co.za.

Before you pay any PMI for training

Two of the four sell qualifications, and training fraud in South Africa usually works by imitating a real accredited provider. Check the provider’s accreditation on the relevant authority’s own register, DHET for a private higher education institution, or the relevant SETA or QCTO for an occupational qualification, rather than on a certificate the provider shows you. Pay the institution, never an individual.
