The title most listings still give her is out of date

If you have arrived here with the words “SAMRC president” attached to her name, that is the thing to correct first, because it will send your enquiry to the wrong switchboard.

Professor Gray led the South African Medical Research Council for ten years, across two five-year terms, ending in 2024. The council’s own announcement of the end of her second term said she was moving into a full-time science role there, working on HIV vaccines. Professor Ntobeko Ntusi has been the council’s president and chief executive since 1 July 2024.

Since then she has moved again. Wits described her in October 2025 as Director of its Infectious Diseases and Oncology Research Institute, and that institute is the one publishing a number and an address you can actually use.

In October 2024 she was also appointed chair of the board of directors of GARDP, the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership, which is based in Geneva and has an African office in Cape Town.

Which of the three you want

• Research, a collaboration, a student enquiry or a request to speak goes to Wits IDORI on +27 11 717 2868 or idori.research@wits.ac.za. That is where she works, and the institute’s mailbox is a role address rather than a person’s, so it survives staff changes.
• Anything to do with antibiotic research and development, or with the board she chairs, goes to GARDP on contact@gardp.org. If you are in South Africa, GARDP Africa has an office in Woodstock, Cape Town, reachable at africa@gardp.org.
• Anything about the SAMRC as an institution, including work done during her tenure, goes to the council itself on +27 21 938 0911. It is no longer her office, and the current president is a different person.

Sending the same message to all three is the slowest option, not the fastest. Each will assume one of the others is handling it.

Why there is no direct line here

We publish contact routes that an organisation has opened for the public. A scientist’s direct line and personal mailbox are not that, and we do not list them for anyone, however senior or however public their work.

There is a specific reason it matters in this case. Professor Gray became a prominent public figure during the coronavirus pandemic, and researchers who are visible on vaccines attract sustained abuse and impersonation. A direct line published where it ranks well in search is not a convenience for the reader; it is a channel handed to whoever is angriest that week, and the institutional numbers above reach her work just as reliably.

Addresses built from a first name and a surname at a university or council domain are guesses, not published facts. They bounce, or they sit unread in a filter. The role mailbox is the one that gets opened.

Journalists

GARDP publishes a media address, communications@gardp.org, which is a role mailbox and the cleanest route for anything touching her board role.

The SAMRC works differently. It publishes no general press mailbox at all, and instead names a specific person from its communications office at the foot of each press release. If you need the council rather than the university, take the contact from the release you are writing about. We do not reproduce those names and mobile numbers here.

Before you write

• Say which organisation you think you are writing to, and why. A message that opens by naming the wrong institution is the one that gets forwarded twice and answered last.
• Put the actual request in the first two lines. Research institutes receive a large volume of general admiration, and it buries the messages that need an answer.
• Do not send medical questions about your own health. Neither the institute nor the council is a treating service, and the SAMRC states on its own site that it does not provide medical advice.
• Expect the reply to come from a colleague rather than from her. That is how a directed institute works, and it is not a brush off.
