PSIRA (also written PSiRA) stands for the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority. It regulates the private security industry in South Africa, including the registration of security service providers and officers, training, and law enforcement against non-compliance. Its mandate comes from the Private Security Industry Regulation Act 56 of 2001: to regulate the private security industry and exercise effective control over the occupation of security service provider in the public and national interest.
PSIRA online services
Before calling, you may be able to do what you need online. PSIRA’s website lists these online services: log in to your profile, claim your profile, online registration, individual verification, business verification, the list of accredited training providers, a wages-per-hour simulator, digital manuals, and a “forgot your mobile” option. Individual and business verification let you check whether a security officer or company is registered, which is useful before hiring a security provider. The site also publishes registration and training forms, circulars, annual reports and a list of withdrawn companies.
How to check your PSIRA status, certificate and grades
To check PSIRA status with an ID number, use PSIRA’s individual verification at digitalservices.psira.co.za/verify-user/4. You can search by ID number or PSiRA number, and see the certificate status and expiry date. To check a security company, use business verification at digitalservices.psira.co.za/verify-user/8 and search by PSiRA number or company name. Verification also works in the PSiRA mobile app on Google Play and the App Store.
PSIRA grades check
To check your grades, log in to your e-PSiRA profile at digitalservices.psira.co.za/login. Your highest grade shows on the dashboard, and all your grades are under View Profile, in your training records. Your e-PSiRA username is the cellphone number you registered with, entered without the leading 0.
What your PSIRA status means
- Active: you are linked to a security business.
- Inactive: you are not currently employed by or linked to any security business.
- CRC Approved: your fingerprints are approved. If your registration is also approved, you can preview the certificate online and book a branch visit to collect your card.
- CRC New Application: your fingerprints were just submitted and will be added to a batch.
- CRC Training Pending: the minimum Grade E or RPL has not been submitted.
- CRC Retake: your fingerprints must be redone.
- CRC Case awaiting trial: you have 90 days to upload stamped case results. A rejected applicant has 60 days to appeal.
PSIRA application status, reference number and certificate waiting period
New individual registration is done online at digitalservices.psira.co.za: you apply, pay R310, have your fingerprints taken (SAP91) at a police station, then book a branch visit to submit the fingerprints with a certified copy of your ID. For progress on an application, call the helpdesk on 086 133 3850. PSIRA publishes a 4 working day turnaround only for business applications; it publishes no waiting period for individual certificates.
To renew a certificate, log in to your profile, choose Service request, then Certificate renewal, pay the R75 renewal fee and download the certificate free of charge.
PSIRA WhatsApp number and app
PSIRA’s WhatsApp number is 082 803 4329, and it also runs a WhatsApp channel. The PSiRA app, on Google Play and the App Store, handles verification and can also be used to lodge complaints. There is no separate app phone number: use the helpdesk on 086 133 3850 for support.

PSIRA working hours and public holidays
All PSIRA offices are open 07:30 to 16:00, Monday to Friday, and are closed on weekends and public holidays. Branch visits, such as card collection, are booked on your e-PSiRA profile under Booking, New booking, where you choose the service type, branch, date and time slot. Complaints can also be made by walking in at any PSIRA office.
PSIRA scam warning
PSIRA’s website carries a public scam warning: fraudulent individuals have been impersonating PSIRA employees and asking businesses and the public for money. PSIRA says not to make any payment to anyone claiming to represent it, and to report suspected fraud immediately to PSIRA and the South African Police Service. The Fraud and Ethics Hotline is 0860 333 036. Its email differs by page: psira@thehotline.co.za on the home page footer and psira@behonest.co.za on the Consumer Awareness page. In September 2026 PSIRA also published a notice to consumers and security service providers about verifying PSIRA compliance documents.
Complaints and recent notices
