PSIRA, the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority, regulates the private security industry in South Africa, including the registration of security service providers and officers, training, and law enforcement against non-compliance. Its mandate comes from the Private Security Industry Regulation Act 56 of 2001: to regulate the private security industry and exercise effective control over the occupation of security service provider in the public and national interest.
PSIRA online services
Before calling, you may be able to do what you need online. PSIRA’s website lists these online services: log in to your profile, claim your profile, online registration, individual verification, business verification, the list of accredited training providers, a wages-per-hour simulator, digital manuals, and a “forgot your mobile” option. Individual and business verification let you check whether a security officer or company is registered, which is useful before hiring a security provider. The site also publishes registration and training forms, circulars, annual reports and a list of withdrawn companies.

PSIRA scam warning
PSIRA’s website carries a public scam warning: fraudulent individuals have been impersonating PSIRA employees and asking businesses and the public for money. PSIRA says not to make any payment to anyone claiming to represent it, and to report suspected fraud immediately to PSIRA and the South African Police Service. The Fraud and Ethics Hotline is 0860 333 036. In September 2026 PSIRA also published a notice to consumers and security service providers about verifying PSIRA compliance documents.
Complaints and recent notices
PSIRA publishes a Complaints Management Process document and a Classification of Complaints page under Publicity on its website, and the helpdesk (086 133 3850) and info@psira.co.za take general queries. Recent notices on the home page cover the verification of PSIRA compliance documents (4 September 2026), the discontinuation of bulk printing of registration certificates for training providers (24 August 2026), registration of fire detection service providers, and mandatory pre-registration for new security officer trainees (19 January 2026).
