The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited builds and maintains the national road network. The contact details below were read from nra.co.za on 2 September 2026.

Official contact channels

SANRAL publishes a fax number directly beneath each telephone number on its site. 012 844 8200 is a fax, not a second switchboard – the same pattern repeats for every regional office below.

Services and responsibilities

Most road complaints reach the wrong agency, and SANRAL is the one people guess. Responsibility is split three ways: SANRAL handles national roads, the provincial roads departments handle regional N and R roads and enforcement within their provinces, and metros and local authorities handle their own street networks and by-law enforcement. A pothole on a suburban street is a municipal matter – SANRAL cannot act on it.

Several toll roads are not run by SANRAL either. Three sections are concessioned to private operators, each with its own customer care line – and that is the number to call about a toll charge, a discount or a payment on those routes:

  • TRAC – N4 from Pretoria east to the Mozambique border: 0800 872 264 (head office 011 805 8788)
  • Bakwena – 385km across the N1 and N4 in Gauteng, North West and Limpopo, including Pretoria to Bela Bela and Pretoria to the Botswana border: 0800 225 9362 or 012 743 9000, info@bakwena.co.za
  • N3TC – 415km of the N3 between Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal and Heidelberg in Gauteng: 0800 63 4357

SANRAL states it manages directly the N1 toll road between Gauteng and Bloemfontein, the N17, the N2 South, the N4 at Pelindaba, the Tsitsikamma toll road near Knysna, and the Huguenot Tunnel. Individual toll plazas publish their own manager’s number for payment and frequent-user discount queries.

Two things in that list are not typing errors on our part. The Northern Cape office publishes the Western Cape’s telephone and fax numbers, and Gauteng and Limpopo share both a number and a postal address in Lynnwood Ridge – the northern region is administered from Tshwane. Expect a Pretoria switchboard when calling about a Limpopo road.

SANRAL lists no office for Mpumalanga, the Free State or North West – roads in those provinces are handled from the regional offices above.

Applications and escalation

Take a road defect or a project query to the regional office covering that road, with the route number and the nearest kilometre marker or interchange – SANRAL works by route, not by suburb.

Report fraud, theft or tender irregularity to the independent Tip-offs Anonymous line on 0800 204 558, which is run outside SANRAL.

SANRAL reports to the National Department of Transport on 012 309 3000, which holds policy and regulation across fourteen transport entities. Enforcement and traffic-officer matters sit with the Road Traffic Management Corporation on 012 665 6000. To report bad driving as a Voluntary Traffic Observer, the line is 0860 400 800 – that is a traffic-observer registration line, not a SANRAL enquiry number.

Maladministration by a state-owned entity can be taken to the Public Protector, and a records request to SANRAL is made under its PAIA manual.
