Do not get out of your vehicle in a game area, and do not feed any animal. Both are how people are killed and how animals end up destroyed. A baboon or hyena that learns to associate cars with food becomes dangerous and is usually put down.

Booking without being scammed

• Book through the official reservations channel, and never by EFT to an individual offering a cancelled booking on social media.
• Peak periods open for booking many months ahead and fill on the day they open. Plan around that rather than around your leave.
• Check the conservation fee, which is separate from accommodation, and whether an annual card would cost less than your planned visits.
• Confirm gate opening and closing times and build in a wide margin. Arriving after gate closing means being locked out or fined.

In the park

Speed limits exist because of animals on the road, not to inconvenience you, and most vehicle-animal collisions happen because someone was late for a gate. Stay in the vehicle except at designated sites, keep windows up around primates, and keep a safe distance from elephants and buffalo.

Report a poaching sighting rather than approaching it. Note the location and vehicle details and tell a ranger or the gate. Malaria prophylaxis is worth medical advice for some parks; ask a doctor well before departure rather than at the gate.
