There is no single SETA. South Africa has a set of Sector Education and Training Authorities, each covering a different industry, and contacting the wrong one wastes time because they do not administer each other’s learnerships or accreditation.

Which SETA you need depends on the industry

SETAs are organised by economic sector, not by province or by qualification level. Your SETA is determined by what the employer does, not by what you personally do inside it. An accountant at a hospital falls under the health sector authority, not a finance one.

Each SETA publishes its own contact details, accreditation lists and learnership information. Start from the sector, identify the SETA, then use that SETA’s own website rather than a general directory.

What a SETA does, and does not, do

• It accredits training providers in its sector, which is what “SETA-accredited” is supposed to mean and why the claim is checkable.
• It administers learnerships and skills programmes, on which learners receive a stipend.
• It does not employ you, and cannot guarantee a job at the end of a programme.
• It is not a professional council. A licence to practise comes from the relevant statutory council, not from a SETA.
• It does not charge learners to register. Any such fee is a fraud.

Checking an “accredited” claim

This is the single most useful habit, because the word “accredited” is the main thing fake training providers sell.

Ask which SETA accredited them, and for the accreditation number, then confirm it with that SETA directly using contact details from the SETA’s own site. A provider that becomes evasive at this point has answered your question.

Be equally careful about the qualification itself: ask whether it is a registered qualification and who issues the certificate. A certificate from an unaccredited provider is not recognised by employers, however impressive it looks.
