The laboratory publishes a participating-clinic finder on its own site, so phone the number above to be directed to a Clicks clinic that actually offers collection. Not every Clicks branch does, and arriving at the wrong one is the common wasted trip.

Legal versus peace-of-mind testing

This is the distinction that matters most and the one people discover too late. A peace-of-mind test is taken by you, at home or at a clinic, without formal identity verification. It is cheaper and faster, and it is not admissible in a South African court. A legal or chain-of-custody test requires each person to be identified against an identity document, sampled by an authorised collector and documented at every step. Only that version can be used for a maintenance claim, a birth registration, an inheritance dispute or an immigration application. If there is any chance the result will be needed legally, pay for the legal test the first time.

Consent is not optional

An adult must consent to their own sample being taken
For a child, consent comes from the parent or legal guardian, and both parents may be required depending on the test and its purpose
Taking a sample from someone without their knowledge, including from a discarded item, is not a basis for a valid legal test and raises its own legal problems
The result is health information and is protected; the laboratory should not release it to a third party without your written authority

Before you buy the kit

Confirm the total price, since the kit at the counter and the laboratory analysis fee are often charged separately
Ask what the turnaround time is from when the laboratory receives the sample, not from when you post it
Ask how the result is delivered and whether counselling or an explanation of the result is included
For a health-risk or ancestry test rather than a relationship test, ask what the report actually tells you, because the clinical usefulness varies enormously
