084 124 is not a hospital extension
The hospital lists 084 124 for emergencies, and it is worth understanding what that number is. It is a national emergency response line, not a desk inside the building. Dialling it reaches an emergency service that dispatches an ambulance, wherever you are in the country.
That is the right number when someone needs to be fetched. It is the wrong number for asking whether a patient has been admitted, or for anything administrative, which belongs on the switchboard. The state ambulance service, 10177, and 112 from a mobile, also reach emergency dispatch.
Use 053, not 086
Both switchboard numbers work, but they cost differently. 086 is a shared cost number, usually dearer than an ordinary call and often unreachable from outside South Africa or on some prepaid packages. 053 838 1111 is the ordinary Kimberley line and reaches the same switchboard.
Pass on the 053 number to family calling from abroad. It is the one that will connect.
The only private hospital of its kind in the province
Kimberley serves a very large, sparsely populated province, and patients travel long distances to reach specialist care here. That has practical consequences worth planning around.
- Confirm the appointment and the specialist before you travel. A wasted trip from a rural town in the Northern Cape can be several hundred kilometres each way.
- Ask whether the specialist you need consults here every week, since visiting specialists in smaller centres often work to a monthly rota.
- Get medical aid pre authorisation before a planned admission and bring the authorisation number.
- Hospital and doctor accounts are billed separately. Ask whether each practitioner is contracted in to your scheme, because that is where shortfall bills come from.
- Emergency treatment may not be refused for inability to pay.
