The Free State has a Health Ombudsperson
This is worth knowing and is not widely used. The province operates an Office of the Health Ombudsperson, established to protect the rights of people using health facilities and services in the Free State.
It sits above the facility’s own complaints process, so use it when a complaint has already been raised with the facility and has not been resolved, rather than as a first step. Take your reference number and the dates with you.
A goldfields town, and occupational health
Welkom exists because of gold mining, and that shapes the health picture in ways an ordinary clinic page would miss.
- Occupational lung disease is a distinct route from ordinary clinic care. Former mineworkers with silicosis or TB related to mining may have claims that a clinic consultation alone does not address.
- Keep your service record and any medical certificates, because compensation claims turn on employment history as much as on diagnosis.
- TB treatment must be completed, not stopped when you feel better. Interrupted courses are how drug resistant TB develops, and the clinic will arrange treatment support.
- A clinic can start the referral to the services that handle occupational disease. Ask explicitly rather than assuming it happens automatically.
Before you go
- Take your ID and clinic card, and arrive early. Public clinic queues run on arrival time.
- A clinic is primary care, not casualty. Serious injury or chest pain needs a hospital and an ambulance.
- Emergency treatment may not be refused for inability to pay.
