The adverts on lamp-posts are illegal and dangerous
South Africa has a large illegal market advertising abortion on street poles, in classified adverts and through WhatsApp numbers, often promising same-day pills, cash prices and no questions. These are not clinics. The people behind them are not registered health practitioners, the medicines are frequently counterfeit or the wrong dose, there is no facility if something goes wrong, and women have died. The pattern is consistent and easy to recognise.

- Cash demanded upfront and no receipt, invoice or patient record
- A promise to terminate at any gestation, which no legitimate provider makes
- No consultation, no examination and no follow-up arrangement
If you have taken something bought this way and you are bleeding heavily, in severe pain or feverish, go to a hospital casualty department immediately or call 10177 for an ambulance. Post-abortion care is legal, free at public facilities and given without judgement or police involvement.
If you are treated badly
- A health worker may refuse to perform the procedure on conscience grounds but may not refuse to refer you or to give you emergency care
- Raise a complaint with the facility manager and ask for it in the complaints register
- The Office of Health Standards Compliance investigates public health establishments, and the Health Professions Council handles individual practitioner conduct
