AVBOB is a South African mutual assurance society providing funeral insurance and funeral services. The detail that matters most on this page is that the same telephone number is answered around the clock for a funeral arrangement but only during business hours for a policy enquiry. Everything below was read from the AVBOB contact page on 31 August 2026.
Official contact channels
- Funeral services and arrangements: 0861 28 26 21 – available 24 hours, 7 days a week
- Customer enquiries: 0861 28 26 21 or [email protected] – 07h00 to 19h00 weekdays, 08h00 to 14h00 Saturdays, closed Sundays and public holidays
- Complaints: [email protected] – 08h00 to 16h30 weekdays
- Compliments: [email protected]
- Head office: +27 12 303 1000
This is the single most useful thing to know about contacting AVBOB. If a death has occurred and you need a funeral arranged, phone 0861 28 26 21 at any hour, including the middle of the night, on a Sunday or on a public holiday – AVBOB staffs that line continuously. If you are phoning the same number about a premium, a policy document or a lapse, you will only be answered during the customer enquiry hours above.
What this organisation provides
AVBOB combines two businesses that most insurers keep separate: it underwrites funeral policies and it also operates the funeral parlours that carry out the funerals. That is why the 24-hour line exists, and why a claim and a funeral arrangement can be started in the same call.
Two specialist channels sit outside general enquiries:
- AVBOB Legal Assist: [email protected]
- Policy replacement notifications: [email protected]
The replacement notification address exists for a specific legal reason. If an adviser is moving you from an existing policy to a new one, that replacement must be formally notified so the consequences of cancelling the old cover are disclosed. If someone is persuading you to switch policies and no notification is being sent, treat that as a warning sign.
AVBOB offers service in several languages, listing Afrikaans, English, Zulu and Sotho or SiPedi on its own contact form, and lets you nominate a preferred language.
Address and operating information
- Head office: 5 Impala Avenue, Irene Link Office Park, Building D, Doringkloof, Centurion, 0157
- Postal: PO Box 1661, Pretoria, 0001
- Telephone: +27 12 303 1000
Head office hours are 08h00 to 17h30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 09h00 to 17h30 on Wednesday, and 08h30 to 13h00 on Saturday, closed on Sundays and public holidays. The later Wednesday opening is easy to miss. AVBOB also operates a national branch network, which its website lists separately – for anything requiring documents to be handed over, a branch is usually more practical than head office.
Support and escalation routes
Send complaints to [email protected] rather than the general enquiries address, and keep the reference. AVBOB also runs an independently operated whistleblower hotline for reporting fraud or misconduct, which does not go through AVBOB staff:
- Whistleblower hotline: 0800 201 411
- Whistleblower email: [email protected]
If AVBOB does not resolve a complaint, escalate according to what went wrong:
- A declined or delayed claim, or how the policy was administered: National Financial Ombud Scheme, 0860 800 900, [email protected]
- Poor advice, or being switched from one policy to another: FAIS Ombud, 012 762 5000, [email protected]
