AVBOB has five offices in Bloemfontein and they are not interchangeable. Three are funeral service branches, which arrange and conduct the funeral. Two are insurance branches, which deal with the policy, the claim and the money. Walking into the wrong one costs a trip at the worst possible time, so the split below matters more than any single number.

Local channels

Funeral service branches:

Insurance branches:

The Hamilton and Oranjesig funeral service branches publish the same number, 051 447 1011. That is one line covering two separate addresses rather than a misprint, so confirm which office you are being directed to when it answers.

Address

14 First Avenue is worth noting because it carries both a funeral service branch and an insurance branch at the same address, on two different numbers. It is the one Bloemfontein address where you can deal with either side without moving, though you still need the right number to reach the right desk before you arrive.

No trading hours are published for any of the five. Funeral service branches generally operate outside ordinary office hours because deaths do not keep to them, while insurance branches usually do not, so call before travelling to an insurance branch in the evening or over a weekend.

Services at this location

The funeral service branches list funeral services, family cars, programmes, grave markers and grave decorations, blankets, refreshments, house tents, burials, cremations, coffins and caskets, funeral policies, tombstones and fresh flowers.

The insurance branches list arranging of funerals, removal of the deceased at home, cash payments, cash claims, updating of policy information, general policy enquiries, adding people to a policy, opening cash back policies, investments and pensioner policies, death claims, and surrendering or cancelling a policy.

Read the overlap carefully, because it is where most confusion sits. Both sides arrange funerals and both handle the removal of the deceased, so either can take the first call. What only the insurance branches do is anything touching the policy itself: lodging a death claim, taking a cash payment, adding a person, or cancelling cover. If someone has died and there is an AVBOB policy in place, you will end up dealing with both sides, and starting with the funeral service branch is usually the right order.

Parent organisation

These five offices are part of the national AVBOB network, which publishes a single national number on 0861 28 26 21 and a separate compliments and complaints route on its website. The national line is the fallback when a branch does not answer, but it cannot arrange a local funeral itself and will refer you back to one of the branches above.

Escalation depends on which half of the business the complaint concerns, and the two go to different places. A funeral policy is an insurance product, so an unresolved dispute about a policy, a claim or a payout goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa on share call 0860 800 900 or at [email protected]. A complaint about the conduct of the funeral service itself is a consumer matter under the Consumer Protection Act, and the National Consumer Commission at [email protected] is the route once AVBOB has given a final answer.
