Completing Capitec funeral cover online
Capitec’s funeral cover is applied for on the Capitec app or at a branch. Capitec says no documents are needed to apply, but you will need the birth dates of every family member you want to add. On the app you can either calculate a premium for the cover amount you want, or pick a monthly premium that fits your budget and see the cover it buys. Your premium depends on the cover amount you choose and the family members you add, and Capitec says there are no automatic annual premium increases.
Who Capitec funeral cover can cover
You can cover yourself and up to 21 family members: up to 2 spouses, 5 parents, 10 children and 8 extended blood relatives. The maximum cover per person is:
| Person covered | Maximum cover |
|---|---|
| Policyholder | R100 000 |
| Spouse (18 to 85 years) | R100 000 |
| Children (newborn to 5 years) | R20 000 each |
| Children (6 to 13 years, and 14 and older) | R50 000 each |
| Parents (26 to 85 years) | R50 000 each |
| Extended blood relatives (0 to 5 years) | R20 000 each |
| Extended blood relatives (6 to 85 years) | R50 000 each |
Capitec notes that the law limits how much can be paid for a child’s death across all policies it knows about, so child cover is capped at the legal maximum. A 6-month waiting period applies to death from natural causes. If a covered person dies in an accident, the funeral benefit is doubled from day one (for children, within the legal limits).
Capitec funeral cover benefits
- Waiting period waiver: if you switch from another licensed insurer and your waiting period there is over, Capitec waives the natural-death waiting period for the same cover amount, if you qualify. You need the previous policy schedule showing cover was active 31 days before you took Capitec’s cover, and proof it was cancelled or lapsed.
- Voluntary policy pause: pause premiums for up to 6 months (all benefits stop during the pause); this benefit has a 24-month waiting period.
- Newborn premium waiver: full cover for up to 6 months if you apply within 3 months of a birth or legal adoption, with an unabridged birth certificate, hospital or clinic card, or adoption letter; 6-month waiting period.
- Death premium waiver: after an approved claim on the policyholder’s death, other lives stay covered for 6 months without premiums.
- Burial repatriation: transport of the deceased from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho or Mozambique to the chosen funeral home closest to the place of burial in South Africa.
How to claim on Capitec funeral cover
Claim by email to InsuranceClaims@capitec.com, at a branch, by sending “Hello” to WhatsApp 067 418 9565, or by calling 0860 10 20 43. For a natural death you need the claimant’s and beneficiary’s identity documents, the beneficiary’s banking details if they do not bank with Capitec, the death certificate, and a completed DHA-1663 or DHA-1680 form. Accidental death claims also need a police report. Capitec says approved payouts into a Capitec account are made immediately, while payouts to other banks may take longer. For repatriation, have your name, address, contact number, policy or ID number, and the deceased’s name, ID number and place of death ready.
