At the time of a death, call 0860 555 991

Emerald Life buries this in its FAQs rather than putting it on its contact page, yet it matters more than any number in the table above.

Emerald-Life-On-Call, on 0860 555 991, gives access to funeral support services for everyone insured on the policy. Emerald Life states that these services are included automatically in the product and are available immediately, without any waiting period. Waiting periods apply only to the funeral benefit itself, not to this support.

What the service covers, according to Emerald Life, is substantial at exactly the moment people are least able to organise:

  • Assistance with making a claim against the policy, and advice on claims procedures.
  • Repatriation of the deceased, and a relative accompanying the body to the place of burial.
  • Identification of credible undertakers and suppliers of flowers for the ceremony.
  • Advice on obtaining a death certificate, and management of the necessary documentation.
  • Legal assistance with interpretation of the will.

The phrase “identification of credible undertakers” is worth pausing on. Families under pressure are routinely overcharged by whoever arrives first, and a service that names vetted undertakers has real value.

There is no downloadable Emerald Life claim form

Emerald Life publishes no claim form to download and no separate claims telephone number or claims mailbox. The published route is the On-Call number above, which includes claim assistance, or the general number and info@emeraldlife.co.za.

Phone rather than email if a death has occurred. Funeral claims are time-sensitive and a mailbox is not.

Waiting periods, and what they apply to

Emerald Life defines a waiting period as the period during which it will not pay a claim, and states that all waiting periods run from the Acceptance Date. When a new life assured is added to an existing policy, the waiting periods apply again to that person. Adding a parent to a policy you have held for years does not give that parent your policy’s history.

On plans that include Double Accidental Death Cover, Emerald Life says double the funeral benefit amount is paid for a valid claim, and that this applies to all lives assured except stillborn children.

Ask for your acceptance date and your waiting periods in writing when you take out or change a policy, and keep that letter with the policy document.

The branches have no contact details

Emerald Life lists around twenty branches: Johannesburg, Centurion, Bellville, Kwanobuhle, Mahikeng, Vredenburg, Newcastle, Mbombela, Bloemfontein, Butterworth, Durban, East London, George, Kimberley, Klerksdorp, Kokstad, Mthatha, Polokwane, Gqeberha, Komani, Worcester, Giyani and Makhanda. Only one of them, Newcastle, displays a street address and a telephone number. Every other branch shows nothing but the shared info@emeraldlife.co.za address, with no address and no number.

The branch listing appears to be broken rather than deliberately sparse, since stray page code shows in place of the missing details. Either way, you cannot phone your local branch. Use 0861 666 333 and say which town you are in.

Checking Emerald Life is real

Funeral cover attracts impostors, so the licence details matter. Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd publishes itself as a licensed insurer with insurer number MI001 and an authorised financial services provider with FSP number 44962, authorised under the Insurance Act 18 of 2017 for the micro insurance product category covering risk and funeral business.

Premiums are advertised from R65 a month, risk profile and product dependent, with up to eighteen family members on one plan across three products: the Care Family Funeral Plan, the Advanced Funeral Plan Family, and the Advanced Funeral Plan Pensioner and Family. Emerald Life’s site also carries a section headed Lion Life to Emerald Life Transfer. If you hold a policy that was moved between those names, that section is where to start.

Pay premiums only by the arrangement on your own policy document. Never pay a funeral premium in cash to someone who calls on you, and never accept new banking details by message.

Before you call Emerald Life

  • The policy number, and the identity number of the policyholder and of the person who has died.
  • The death certificate, or the reference from the funeral parlour if you already have it, and the date of death.
  • Which plan you are on and who is listed on it, since cover for extended family and parents-in-law has its own conditions.

Emerald Life publishes no operating hours, so treat 0861 666 333 as a weekday business-hours line and use the On-Call number outside those hours.
