Mining has been carried on in the Free State goldfields since the 1940s, and several operations sit close together around Welkom. Confirm which shaft or operation you actually need before travelling, because they are separately managed and can be an hour apart.

If you are pursuing a silicosis or occupational lung disease claim, the route is the statutory compensation system rather than the mine switchboard, and claims can be lodged in respect of employment at operations going back many years.
