About the Rustenburg operation
According to Sibanye-Stillwater’s Rustenburg page, the operation is a shallow to intermediate-depth platinum group metals (PGM) mine on the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex. It lies north-east of Rustenburg and Kroondal in North West, about 126km north-west of Johannesburg. The company gives these figures as at 31 December 2025:

The operation has three conventional vertical shafts in production (Siphumelele 1, Khuseleka 1 and Thembelani 1) and shallow mechanised incline shafts that use bord-and-pillar mining. Siphumelele 1 is worked to about 1,350m below surface, Khuseleka 1 to about 950m and Thembelani 1 to about 1,030m. The vertical shafts mine both the Merensky and UG2 reefs, while the mechanised shafts mine only UG2. Ore is processed at the Waterval UG2 concentrator and at the K1 and K2 plants, and the concentrate is toll-treated by Valterra Platinum. The site also has a hospital or medical centre, workshops, offices, accommodation and hostels, and water treatment plants.

Rustenburg and Kroondal
Sibanye-Stillwater bought the Rustenburg operation from Anglo American in 2016, along with a 50% stake in Kroondal through its acquisition of Aquarius Platinum. It took full ownership of Kroondal under a 2022 agreement. In January 2025, the Rustenburg operation received regulatory approval to take over all of Kroondal’s assets and liabilities. The Rustenburg page now lists the Kwezi, K6, Kopaneng and Bambanani shafts as part of the operation.
