Vodacom handles a deceased customer account through a process it calls Deceased Account Management, and it publishes two different numbers for it. Which one you use depends on the state of the account rather than on what you want to do.

Task scope

This covers cancelling a contract, converting a line to prepaid, transferring ownership of a mobile or fibre line, and claiming the funeral benefit attached to some contracts.

Route

  • Subscriber Collections, if the account is in arrears: 082 1946
  • Customer Care, if the account is not in arrears or after hours: 082 135
  • Following up an existing request with a consultant: 082 1905

Requirements

Documents must be submitted in JPEG or PDF format only. Vodacom distinguishes between an executor, who is appointed to administer the estate, and next of kin, meaning the closest living relatives by blood or marriage; an executorship letter is what confirms the appointment. A deceased account form is downloadable from the Vodacom help pages.

Steps

Once documents are submitted, a reference number is generated and emailed to you automatically, together with information about the request, and a consultant makes contact within three working days. When following up, quote that reference number, and if you write in, put it in the email subject line. Prepaid conversion and contract cancellation are each usually completed within 48 hours once all documents are in. Transfer of ownership on a mobile line depends on the outcome of credit vetting, and Vodacom directs that enquiry to the store where the transfer was applied for rather than to the call centre.

Escalation

If the customer had Contract Cover Plus, a lump sum of R5,000 may be paid. Vodacom pays it in a set order: to the surviving spouse; if there is none, to the children in equal shares; if the children are minors, to the legal guardian; and if none of those apply, to the late estate. Where there is no eligible beneficiary and no late estate account, the executor has to open a bank account for the payment, and a closed late estate account has to be reopened before the money can be paid in. Note that the follow-up mailbox is masked on the Vodacom website and cannot be read from the page, so use the reference number and the numbers above.
