A courier will never ask you to pay a release fee by EFT to an individual. The most common parcel scam in South Africa is an SMS claiming customs duty or a redelivery charge on a shipment you may genuinely be expecting. Track on the courier’s own site instead of following the link.

Who is liable when a parcel goes missing
The answer is usually not the person waiting at home. The contract is between the sender and the courier, so if you bought something online, the claim is the retailer’s to lodge, and the retailer remains responsible to you for delivering what you paid for.
- Go back to the seller first, not the courier, and put it in writing.
- Quote the waybill number in every message. Without it nothing can be traced.
- Declared value matters. Standard liability is limited unless the sender declared and insured the goods.
- Photograph damaged packaging before opening further, and note the damage on the delivery slip at the moment of signing.

A card payment gives you a chargeback route; an EFT to a stranger gives you almost none. That difference is worth more than any tracking number.
