Booking a licence appointment
- Work out which licensing and testing centre serves your address. It is set by where you live, not by which centre has the shortest queue.
- Book rather than walk in where booking is offered. Several provinces and metros run online booking, and a booked slot is worth far more than an early arrival.
- Check what the centre requires before you go: identity document, proof of address, the current licence or permit, and the correct payment method.
- Renew a driving licence well before it expires. Card production takes time, and driving on an expired licence is an offence even while a renewal is in process.
- Keep the receipt and any temporary permit issued. It is your proof that the renewal was started in time.
What to have ready
- Your identity document. Nothing at a licensing counter happens without it.
- Proof of address, usually not older than three months.
- The current licence, permit or vehicle registration document for whatever you are renewing.
- The vehicle’s registration number and, for a change of ownership, the details of both parties.
- The correct payment method. Many centres do not take cash, and some take card only.
Traffic fines are a separate matter
A traffic fine is dealt with by the authority that issued it, which may be the municipality, a metro police department or a provincial traffic authority, and not necessarily the office nearest you. The notice itself names the issuing authority and carries the reference number that any query works from.
Where an infringement notice is issued under the AARTO system, the Road Traffic Infringement Agency is the body that deals with representations against it. Check which system your notice was issued under before assuming a process applies, because the route for a representation differs.

The scam to watch for
Licence fixers are the standing scam around every traffic department in the country. Someone at or near the centre offers to skip the queue, guarantee a test pass, or produce a licence without the test, for a fee in cash.
- A licence obtained that way is not valid, whatever the person claims, and it can be traced back to you.
- Paying an official to skip a queue or pass a test is bribery, and the person paying commits an offence as well as the person taking the money.
- No legitimate booking service asks for cash into a personal account. Fees are paid to the municipality and receipted by it.
- Treat anyone approaching you in the queue or the parking area as a fixer, not an official. Officials work at counters.
