Check which one has contacted you before you respond, because they do different things.
- MBD Credit Solutions is a debt collection business, part of Nutun. This is the one most people mean.
- Munnik Basson Dagama Incorporated, also styled MBD Inc, is a separate law firm with its own website and offices.
The letterhead settles it. A collections letter from the Nutun business carries MBD Credit Solutions branding; correspondence from the law firm names Munnik Basson Dagama. If you complain to the wrong one, nothing happens.

MBD also runs a digital self-service channel for arranging payment, which avoids holding on a call. Have your reference number ready, whichever route you use, because a collector cannot find you by name alone.
Why an account you never opened with them is theirs
People contact collectors confused about how a stranger came to hold their debt. There are two mechanisms and they are not the same.
- Handed over for collection. The original creditor still owns the debt and has appointed a collector to recover it. Payment settles the original account.
- Sold. The debt was bought outright, and the buyer is now the creditor. This is lawful, and it is why a company you have never dealt with can be entitled to collect.
Ask which applies, and who the original creditor was. You are entitled to that, and to a breakdown of how the amount is made up, in writing, before you discuss payment.
Before you pay
- Most consumer debt prescribes after three years without acknowledgement or payment, and prescribed debt cannot be enforced. A payment or an admission can restart that clock, which is why very old accounts are sometimes pursued for a small first instalment.
- Get any settlement agreement in writing before paying, including that the account will be closed and the credit bureau updated.
- Pay into the company’s own account, never an individual’s. Banking details differing from the official letter are a reason to stop and phone 011 560 6111.
- Keep every proof of payment. Disputes about what was paid are the most common follow-on problem.

Raise it with the company in writing first and keep the reference. Beyond that, the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627 or [email protected] oversees credit providers, debt counsellors and credit bureaus, and registered debt collectors additionally answer to the Council for Debt Collectors, which caps what may be charged.
