The Health Professions Council of South Africa publishes two different switchboard numbers on its own website, and they differ by a transposed digit. The one below is the number carried in its labelled contact link.

Official contact channels

What this regulator handles

The HPCSA registers and regulates health practitioners other than nurses and pharmacists, covering doctors, dentists, psychologists, physiotherapists, radiographers and related professions. It also publishes judgements and holds hearings and inquiries into practitioner conduct.

Complaints and escalation process

A complaint against a registered practitioner is lodged with the council itself rather than with a hospital or practice. The hotline numbers above are a separate anonymous reporting channel, run by an outside provider, and are intended for reporting misconduct rather than for general enquiries. Note that the hotline block also lists a fax on 0867 261 681, which is a fax and will not connect as a voice call.

Address and operating information

The council is at 553 Madiba Street, Arcadia, Pretoria, 0002. The number discrepancy is worth checking before you dial: the banner across the top of the HPCSA site shows 012 338 9300 and 012 338 9301, while its contact link is labelled by phone and gives 012 389 9300. The middle three digits are transposed between the two. The labelled contact link is used here because its displayed text and its underlying dial link agree with each other.
