A settlement figure on a Standard Bank vehicle finance account is handled by personal banking rather than by a separate settlements desk. One number printed on the vehicle finance pages is not a working line at all.

Task scope

Vehicle and asset finance covers the settlement balance on a financed car, paying extra into the account, restructuring after a lump sum, and the letters you need to take a financed vehicle across a border.

Route

Requirements

Debit order payments are mandatory on a vehicle finance account and cannot be cancelled in favour of manual payments, so a settlement plan works around the debit order rather than replacing it. If you pay additional funds in, you must contact the bank afterwards to say how you want them applied.

Steps

Additional funds paid into a vehicle finance account can be used in one of three ways: reducing the monthly instalment, shortening the payment term, or reducing the balloon payment at the end. The money is not automatically applied to any of these, so the account has to be restructured after the payment is made. If you are taking the vehicle out of South Africa you need a cross border letter each time, requested through the Banking App, Online Banking or on 0860 123 000, supported by your identity document, an insurance letter no older than seven days showing your travel dates and destination, the vehicle details, and copies of the identity document and driving licence of any additional driver.

Escalation

A caution on the published numbers. The vehicle management pages show the text Call us 0860 000 000 in two places. A number made entirely of zeros is placeholder text left in the page rather than a line that connects; use 0860 123 000. If you are struggling to keep up payments, Standard Bank directs customers to its Debt Care Centre rather than to the ordinary collections route. An unresolved complaint goes to the complaint resolution centre on 0860 101 101, then to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900, with the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627 for the credit agreement.
