Rustenburg does not have its own North West education office. The department divides the province into four districts and Rustenburg sits in the Bojanala district, which its own site describes as the Rustenburg and Brits area. The department publishes one departmental contact rather than separate district numbers, so that is the route, asking for Bojanala.

Services and responsibilities
The North West Department of Education runs public schooling in the province and publishes sections for early childhood development, examinations, learner registration, school forms and documents, tenders and careers. Its four districts and the areas they cover are published as Bojanala for the Rustenburg and Brits area, Ngaka Modiri Molema for Mahikeng, Zeerust and Lichtenburg, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati for Vryburg and Taung, and Dr Kenneth Kaunda for Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom. Knowing which district you fall under is the practical part, because that is the level most school matters are resolved at.
Office and address information
The departmental office is in the Garona Building in Mmabatho, which is the North West seat of provincial government, so it is a considerable distance from Rustenburg and not somewhere to travel to for a routine school matter. Note that the number the department publishes is a mobile number rather than a landline switchboard, which is unusual for a provincial department but is what appears on its own site. If it does not answer, use the email address, which is the more reliable written record in any event.
Applications and escalation
Deal with the school first for admissions, placement, fees, transfers and a complaint about a teacher, because principals and school governing bodies run schools day to day. The district is the next level and handles most unresolved school matters, so ask to be directed to Bojanala when you contact the department. Be careful about contact details circulating for individual district officials: names and personal mobile numbers for district directors appear in news items and directory listings, and those are individual contacts rather than published service lines, so they are not reproduced here and may be out of date. If the department does not act, the Public Protector investigates maladministration by organs of state and the South African Human Rights Commission takes complaints where access to basic education is at stake. Teacher misconduct goes to the South African Council for Educators, and matric certificate matters are handled nationally by the Department of Basic Education rather than by a province.
