Absa Instant Life has its own service number in the Absa contact directory, separate from the number used for the rest of the Absa life range. Getting the two mixed up is the usual reason a life policy query is transferred.

Official contact channels

Note that 0860 227 253 is listed against three different things in the same directory: Absa Life Cover, Credit Protection Cover and Home Loan Protector insurance. Only 0860 000 072 is specific to Instant Life, so use that one if your policy is an Instant Life policy and quote the policy number when you call.

What this organisation provides

Instant Life sits in the Absa life insurance range alongside funeral cover, the credit protection plan and health cover. Life cover pays a lump sum to your beneficiaries when you die, which is different in kind from credit protection cover, which settles a specific debt, and from funeral cover, which pays a smaller amount quickly to cover a funeral. People often hold more than one of these with the same bank and then claim against the wrong one, so check which product the policy schedule actually names before you phone.

Address and operating information

There is no walk in counter for a life policy. Absa handles policy servicing by telephone and through the insurance self-service section of its website, and the registered head office is Absa Towers West, 15 Troye Street, Johannesburg, 2000. The complaint line keeps shorter hours than the product lines, running weekdays 08:00 to 16:30 only, so a complaint raised late on a Friday will not be looked at until Monday.

Support and escalation routes

Raise a claim or policy problem on the Instant Life number first, then in writing to the Complaint Resolution Suite so there is a record. If it remains unresolved, a dispute about a long term insurance claim being declined or underpaid goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa on 0860 800 900. Where the complaint is about the advice given when the policy was sold, rather than about the claim itself, the FAIS Ombud on 012 762 5000 is the correct body. Market conduct across insurers is regulated by the FSCA. Ask for the reason for a declined claim in writing, because both ombud schemes will want to see it.
