BetterSure sells building, home contents and life insurance in South Africa. It runs a single share call number and one client care mailbox, with claims submitted through a dedicated page rather than by telephone.

Official provider route

The number is an 086 share call line rather than a toll free one, so it is not free from a mobile. If you are calling about a claim already in progress, the written route usually serves you better, because a claim reference and a dated email are worth more later than a recollection of what an agent said.

Product or service support

The home side splits into two separate covers and people routinely assume they have both when they have one. Building insurance covers the structure of the home together with the fixtures and fittings that belong to you. Home contents insurance covers your belongings inside it. A burst geyser damaging the ceiling is a building claim, the ruined carpet under it is a contents claim, and a policy with only one of the two will pay only half of that.

Life insurance is sold alongside, and it is a different product with different rules, a different claims process and a different beneficiary structure. Do not assume a single policy number covers both.

Eligibility, account or policy requirements

The most expensive mistake in home insurance is insuring for too little. If the sum insured is below what it would actually cost to rebuild or replace, an insurer is generally entitled to reduce the payout in the same proportion, so a house insured for half its replacement cost can produce roughly half a claim even on a small loss. That is the average clause, and it applies to partial claims, not just total ones. Review the sum insured yearly against building costs rather than against what you paid for the house.

Keep an inventory for contents, with photographs and the serial numbers of anything valuable, and keep it somewhere other than the house. Note also that many home policies require specified items above a value threshold to be listed individually, so an expensive item you never declared may not be covered at all.

Escalation route

Complain to the insurer first, in writing, and keep the reference. If it is not resolved, short term insurance complaints, which is what building and contents cover are, go to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900. That office deals with the decision on your claim.

If the complaint is about the advice you were given when the policy was sold, or about a broker rather than the insurer, that is a financial advice matter for the FAIS Ombud on 012 762 5000. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority regulates the conduct of both insurers and advisers, and it is worth confirming that whoever sold you the cover holds a licence before you buy.
