If an MTN order is coming to you by DSV, the important thing to understand is who you have a contract with. You bought from MTN. DSV is the courier MTN engaged, and it is acting for MTN rather than for you, which is why a call to the courier usually cannot fix an order problem.
Official provider route
For anything about the order itself, go to MTN. These are the routes MTN publishes.
- From an MTN phone: dial 135
- From any other network: 083 135
- MTN Chat on WhatsApp: 083 123 0011
- MTN Fibre: 083 123 4273
- Report fraud: 083 135 4357 or [email protected]
- Physical address: MTN Proprietary Limited, Innovation Centre, 216 14th Avenue, Fairland
- Postal address: Private Bag 9955, Cresta 2118
The WhatsApp number is a genuine chat line rather than a switchboard, and it is the easier route for a delivery query because it leaves a written record of what you were told and when.
Product or service support
DSV publishes no telephone number on its South African contact page. What it offers instead is an online contact form, a Track and Trace tool, a set of self service tools and an office finder covering more than ninety countries. So the practical division of labour is this: use DSV Track and Trace to find out where a parcel is, and use MTN for anything that needs a decision.
That division matters because a courier has no authority over the sale. DSV can tell you that a parcel is at a depot or out for delivery, and it can attempt a redelivery. It cannot cancel your order, change the handset, re-issue a SIM, refund you, or alter a contract term, because it was not party to the agreement. Asking it to do any of those simply adds a step.
Before you contact either of them, have both references to hand: the MTN order number and the DSV waybill or tracking number. They are different numbers issued by different companies, and each will only search on its own.
Eligibility, account or policy requirements
A delivery involving a SIM card or a new contract has a legal step attached that catches people out. South African law requires SIM registration, commonly called RICA, and that means proof of identity and proof of residential address have to be provided and verified. If the documentation is not in order at the point of handover, the courier is entitled to refuse to hand the parcel over, and that is not the courier being obstructive.
Make sure the delivery address and the name match the order, have your identity document ready, and be aware that someone else signing for a SIM in your place can create a problem that has to be unwound later. If you will not be there, arrange it with MTN before the delivery is attempted rather than with the driver on the day.
Escalation route
Use MTN own escalation ladder in order. Contact one of the routes above first and get a reference. MTN states that if you have used those touchpoints and have not received feedback, or fourteen days have passed since you last heard from it, you should take the matter to its Complaints Management team. That fourteen day marker is worth noting, because it is the point at which MTN itself accepts the matter should move up.
Beyond MTN, mobile operators are licensed by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa, which handles consumer complaints against licensees once the operator has had a fair chance to resolve them. Separately, the obligation to deliver what you paid for sits with MTN as the supplier under the Consumer Protection Act, not with the courier, so a non delivery complaint is made against MTN and can go to the National Consumer Commission. Keep the order number, the tracking number and the dates of every contact.
