FoneYam USSD code
Dial *134*33011# from your phone. FoneYam lists the USSD code as free, so you can use it without airtime. You can also reach FoneYam on WhatsApp at 0860 900 900.
What FoneYam is
FoneYam rents smartphones rather than selling them on a network contract. According to FoneYam’s rental guide, the standard rental period is 13 months and 7 days: you pay 30% of the device’s retail selling price upfront when you collect the phone, a second “day-7” payment seven days later, and then 12 monthly payments, the first due 30 days after the day-7 payment. Qualifying customers can also use FoneYam’s Refone product, paid over 19 months. To apply you need a valid South African ID or passport and must be 18 or older; you can apply online, by WhatsApp, or at selected PEP, Ackermans, Dunns or HiFi Corp stores. FoneYam says rentals from 4 November 2024 include free insurance covering death, disability, loss of income, and a lost or stolen device.
FoneYam payments and your reference number
FoneYam says you can pay in store at any participating PEP, Ackermans, Dunns or HiFi Corp, or online via Payat using your contract reference number. Always use your unique contract reference number for online payments so the money is allocated to your account; you can also set up a recurring debit order for your monthly payments. If you do not know your reference number, contact FoneYam on 0860 900 900, WhatsApp or *134*33011# with the phone number linked to your account.
Missed payments and locked phones
FoneYam’s guide says that if you miss a payment, your device is locked remotely using its pre-installed security software until the missed payment is made. If you know you cannot pay on time, contact FoneYam’s customer service as soon as possible: FoneYam says it can offer an extension of your payment due date to help you catch up and avoid being locked out.
At the end of your rental
When the rental period ends, FoneYam says you can buy the phone at its fair market value, typically between R15 and R165 depending on the device, or return it to any PEP store and apply for a new device. You cannot upgrade mid-rental. FoneYam also notes that it is governed by the Consumer Protection Act.
Phones, lost devices and scams
FoneYam’s website lists smartphones from brands including Samsung, Motorola, Honor, Xiaomi, Hisense and Vivo, with a price calculator for devices valued from about R1,300 to R7,000 that shows the upfront, day-7 and monthly payments. If your rented phone is lost or stolen, contact FoneYam straight away on 0860 900 900 or WhatsApp: FoneYam says it can lock the device remotely to protect your personal information, and its free insurance on rentals from 4 November 2024 covers a lost or stolen device.
