Absa does not publish a public line for a forensic department. Forensic investigation is an internal function, and the route customers are given for anything involving fraud is the Fraud Hotline, which operates around the clock.
Official provider route
- Fraud Hotline: 0860 557 557
- From outside South Africa: +27 11 501 5089
- Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- Fraud can also be reported through the Absa banking app, using the telephone icon or the call-me-back option
- Lost or stolen cards, which is a different desk: 0800 111 155 or 011 501 5050, also 24/7
Report the card lost or stolen and report the fraud as separate actions. Blocking a card stops further transactions but does not itself open a dispute on the money already gone, and callers who do only the first often discover weeks later that nothing was investigated.
Product or service support
- Reporting unauthorised transactions on an account or card
- Reporting phishing, vishing and SIM-swap fraud
- Card blocking and reissue through the lost and stolen cards desk
- Follow-up on an existing fraud case reference
- Complaints about how a fraud case was handled, through the complaints route rather than the hotline
Ask for a case or reference number on the first call and write down the date and time. Every later conversation, and any escalation beyond the bank, will start by asking for it.
Eligibility, account or policy requirements
- Report as soon as you notice the transaction; delay weakens a claim
- You will be asked to confirm your identity before anything is discussed
- Absa will never phone and ask you to disclose a PIN, password or one-time PIN
- A caller asking you to move money to a safe account is committing fraud; no bank does this
- Keep statements, SMS notifications and any messages from the fraudster
The safe-account instruction is the single most common script used against bank customers in South Africa. If a caller claiming to be from the bank asks you to transfer money anywhere, end the call and dial the hotline number yourself rather than any number the caller gives you.
Escalation route
- If the hotline does not resolve it: the Absa Complaint Resolution Suite on 0800 41 41 41 or [email protected], weekdays 08:00 to 16:30
- Unresolved bank complaints go to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900
- Criminal matters should also be reported to the South African Police Service, and a case number obtained
- Identity theft can be registered with the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service to flag your identity number
- Conduct of a financial institution is regulated by the FSCA
Open a police case even where the bank is investigating. The two run in parallel, the ombud will ask whether you did, and a SAPS case number is often what unlocks recovery from a third party the bank cannot compel.
