China has no embassy in Durban. The embassy is in Pretoria, and Durban is served by the Consulate-General of the People Republic of China, which is in Umhlanga.
Check the address before you travel. Many directories still list the consulate at Stirling Crescent in Durban North; its own site gives 45 Zenith Drive, Umhlanga New Town Centre. Use the consulate address, not the directory one.

The qualifier on the telephone number matters. It is published as a line for Chinese nationals, so a South African applying for a visa should use the visa application service centre rather than the consulate number.

Visa work is outsourced to the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre, which runs its own Durban office and its own appointment system. Going to the consulate itself with a visa application is the most common wasted trip.

- It observes Chinese public holidays as well as South African ones, so closures do not follow the local calendar

Because it closes for two sets of public holidays, check the notices page before travelling. Chinese New Year and the National Day holiday in early October both close consular services for several days at a time.

Get the order of authentication right. A document authenticated by the consulate before DIRCO has done its step is normally rejected, and the sequence cannot be reversed without starting again.
