Which FoneYam contracts have insurance

FoneYam states that its insurance cover only applies to contracts concluded on or after 4 November 2024, and that terms and conditions apply. It describes the cover as free, at no cost to you. On the insurance page, FoneYam says it is insured against your death, disability or loss of income, or your device being lost or stolen, which is why the claim is logged with FoneYam rather than directly with the insurer. FoneYam phones are taken on a contract with an initial payment and 12 monthly payments, applied for online or at selected PEP, Ackermans, Dunns and HiFiCorp stores.

Documents for a FoneYam insurance claim

Claim typeWhat FoneYam asks for
Lost or stolen deviceReport it at your nearest police station for a SAPS case number. Then an affidavit with your full name and surname, ID or passport number, contract cellphone number, the device’s IMEI number, your ITC number, the SAPS case or OB number and a brief description and date of the incident, plus a certified copy of your ID or passport.
DeathA certified copy of the deceased’s ID or passport and the death certificate.
DisabilityAn affidavit of lost income, a medical report on the disability, an employer termination letter and a UI19 confirming illness termination (Code 10).
Loss of incomeAn affidavit of lost income, 3 months’ bank statements, a UI19 form from your employer and a retrenchment letter from your employer.

For disability and loss of income claims, FoneYam says Abacus, the insurer, will contact you with further instructions once the claim is logged, so prepare the documents while you wait.

What happens when your claim is approved

  • Death, disability or loss of income: once approved, you no longer have to keep paying your contract.
  • Lost or stolen device, contract concluded on or after 4 November 2024: you receive a replacement device and continue with your original contract, provided all outstanding payments have been paid.
  • Lost or stolen device, terms accepted on or after 20 April 2026: the contract terminates on the date FoneYam tells you the claim is approved, and you no longer have to keep paying it.

FoneYam also offers remote locking when a device is lost or stolen, to protect your personal information. The full insurance terms and conditions can be downloaded from the bottom of FoneYam’s insurance page.

If your FoneYam claim is stuck or declined

Check the status with “Track claim” first. If it has not moved, call or WhatsApp 0860 900 900, or email info@foneyam.co.za, with your contract cellphone number and your claim details, and keep the reference you are given. If you disagree with a decision, compare it against the downloadable insurance terms and ask FoneYam to explain the outcome. Insurance disputes that are not resolved by the insurer can be taken to the National Financial Ombud Scheme on 0860 800 900.
