Car tracker is a category, not a company, so there is no Polokwane branch of anything called Car Tracker. The company actually named Tracker does have a Polokwane presence, and the way it is organised explains why searching for a local branch number gets you nowhere.

Tracker national numbers

Every one of these is national. There is no Polokwane switchboard to dial instead, and the emergency number is the one that matters: if a vehicle has been taken, that call starts the recovery and every minute counts. Save it before you need it rather than searching for it at the roadside.

The Polokwane fitment centre

Tracker fits units through independent fitment centres rather than through its own branches. Its locator lists 100 fitment centres against 15 Tracker offices nationally, and the Polokwane entry on the fitment side is Tuff Tint Fitment Centre Polokwane.

Two notes on that listing. Tracker own locator prints the street as GYPSUSM, a typo for Gypsum, so search for Gypsum Street when navigating. And the only number published for the centre is a mobile, which is normal for an independent fitment business but does mean nobody answers it outside working hours. Emergencies go to 080 013 2323, never to the fitment centre.

What the fitment centre can and cannot do

The centre installs and removes hardware and issues the installation certificate your insurer wants. It cannot see your account, change your banking details, cancel a subscription or handle a billing dispute, because it is a separate business rather than a Tracker office. All of that goes to client support on 086 060 5040.

Some centres in the network are marked as an Exclusive Centre on the locator. Tracker defines an Exclusive Centre as a certified Tracker-exclusive installation facility — a workshop that fits Tracker units and no competing brand. It is a classification, not a quality rating, and it tells you what the centre is allowed to fit rather than how well it fits it.

Getting a unit fitted

Choosing a tracking product at all

Insurers often require tracking on higher-risk vehicles, and the requirement is usually for an approved product rather than a specific brand. Ask your insurer which category they require before you buy, because a cheaper unit that does not meet their specification satisfies nobody. Ask also whether the product includes recovery, since a device that reports a position is not the same as a service that sends a recovery team.
