Standard Bank debt review department and how the process runs
Standard Bank’s own Debt Review department handles applications it receives from debt counsellors under the National Credit Act, on behalf of consumers in financial distress. Debt review is a process under that Act. The relief agreed may change your instalment, the term of your loans and the interest rate. Standard Bank describes the process like this:
- Contact a registered debt counsellor of your choice and complete an application.
- The debt counsellor notifies all your credit providers and the credit bureau.
- Credit providers share your balances, and the counsellor assesses whether you are over-indebted.
- The counsellor negotiates a repayment plan with your credit providers.
- Your debts are restructured, and the plan is made official through a debt review court order.
- You pay the restructured instalments, and the counsellor issues a clearance certificate when all the debt is settled.

Standard Bank debt centre rules while you are under review
Once you are under debt review, you cannot access or apply for new credit, and you are listed at the credit bureau as under debt review. If you are married in community of property, your spouse must agree to go under debt review too.
If you only need lower monthly repayments and do not want to go under debt review, the Debt Care Centre on 0860 111 400 offers an in-house debt relief solution with an online application.
