Official Absa bond relief route

Absa asks home loan clients who are struggling to contact it as soon as possible on 0861 222 272. From abroad, use +27 11 221 0200. If you prefer to write, email bondrs@absa.africa. The line is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:30 and on Saturday from 08:00 to 13:00.

The general Home Loans number, 0860 111 007, is for other home loan questions and for a call back from one of Absa’s property experts. For repayment trouble, use the dedicated line above.

The relief options Absa describes are:

  • Short-term payment plan: pay a reduced instalment for up to six months while Absa looks for a long-term solution.
  • Term extension: the loan term can be extended up to 360 months, with the arrears added to the outstanding balance.
  • Arrears arrangement: settle arrears in one month or over six months, or make partial payments on a forbearance plan if you meet the affordability criteria.
  • HelpUSell: if you can no longer afford the property, you sign a mandate and Absa-appointed agents value and list it. The offer is up to 50% off the home loan shortfall, subject to terms and conditions. You pay the transfer fees, commission, cancellation and legal costs.

What you need before contacting Absa

The short-term payment plan and the term extension are only available for home loans older than nine months, so check when your loan started before you call. Absa assesses affordability before it offers a plan, so be ready to discuss your current income and expenses.

If you are selling through HelpUSell and have an offer, you will need the buyer’s offer and proof of the buyer’s finance, which go to privatesales@absa.co.za.

Step-by-step contact process

  1. Call 0861 222 272 (or +27 11 221 0200 from abroad), or email bondrs@absa.africa, as soon as you know you cannot pay.
  2. Absa assesses your affordability and offers a payment plan, a term extension or a forbearance plan.
  3. If you can no longer afford the property, sign a HelpUSell mandate. Send any offer, with proof of the buyer’s finance, to privatesales@absa.co.za.

Escalation route

Absa does not publish a separate escalation line for bond relief on its repayment help page. Use the repayment help line and email above, and keep a record of who you spoke to and what was offered. Absa Bank Limited (registration number 1986/004794/06) is an authorised financial services provider and a registered credit provider, NCRCP7.

For other banks and lenders, browse the banking and finance hub or the banking directory A listings.
