The main Absa debt collection number is the pre-legal contact centre on 0861 222 272, for accounts in arrears before legal action starts. Absa Bank has no single “debt collection” contact page: its collections routes differ by product, so home loans, vehicle finance and credit cards each have their own line.

This page covers Absa arrears and collections only. For Absa’s other numbers, see the main Absa contact details page.

Official Absa debt collection route

Absa’s collection department asks customers to get in touch through the pre-legal contact centre on 0861 222 272 when they fall behind. Absa’s vehicle finance pages give the same number for help negotiating a more affordable repayment plan, and its forbearance article prints it as 086 122 2272 for queries about your credit record, forbearance or debt counselling.

Once a matter has moved to the sale or legal stage on a home loan, the HelpUSell (HUS) and legal contact centre is 0861 221 221. Queries about a sale in execution go by email to HLSIEqueries@absa.co.za.

For vehicle finance, if you want to sell the car to avoid repossession, use FASTBuy HelpUSell: email FASTBuyHUS@absa.africa or call 0860 789 555. For credit card debt, call 0861 462 273 or email contactcard@absa.co.za. Personal loan arrears can be paid online by choosing “Pay my arrears” in Absa online banking.

What you need before contacting Absa

Absa assesses what it can offer against your affordability, so be ready to discuss your income and expenses. Know which product is in arrears (home loan, vehicle finance, credit card or personal loan) so you call the right centre.

It helps to understand the timeline. Absa sends letters, SMSs and calls about arrears before six payments are missed. After six missed home loan payments, the customer gets a letter of demand, is placed in default and formal legal action follows. Contacting Absa early keeps more options open.

Absa Credit Coach in the Absa app lets you check your TransUnion score for free and identify and pay overdue accounts.

Step-by-step contact process

  1. Contact Absa before you miss payments: call the pre-legal contact centre on 0861 222 272 to discuss your arrears.
  2. Ask about forbearance. On a home loan, Short-Term Plans can reduce instalments for six months (potentially up to 12), with concessions down to 25% of the instalment based on affordability. Long-Term Plans can restructure the loan up to 360 months.
  3. If you need to sell the asset: for a home loan, call the HelpUSell / legal contact centre on 0861 221 221; for a vehicle, email FASTBuyHUS@absa.africa or call 0860 789 555.
  4. For personal loan arrears, pay online through “Pay my arrears” in Absa online banking.
  5. For sales in execution queries on a home loan, email HLSIEqueries@absa.co.za.

On vehicle finance, Absa lists short-term arrangements, a loan restructure, HelpUSell through FASTBuy, or voluntary surrender. You remain liable for any shortfall after the vehicle is sold. On a home loan, a Sheriff’s sale in execution is used only after other options fail.

Escalation route

Absa does not publish a separate escalation line for collections. If you are already in the legal stage on a home loan, use the HUS / legal contact centre on 0861 221 221; otherwise start with the pre-legal contact centre on 0861 222 272. Absa Bank Limited is a registered credit provider, NCRCP7.

For other banks and lenders, browse the banking and finance hub or the banking directory A listings.
