Absa deceased estates email and how to use it
Write to deceasedestates@absa.africa to request the Form 7581 instruction or to follow up on an estate. Absa asks that an email request include the name, a copy of the identity document, and contact details of the person requesting it. Have the deceased’s identity number and the death certificate ready, plus your own identity document, and the Letter of Executorship or Letter of Authority once it has been issued, since most steps require it. Get more certified copies than you think you need: every institution wants its own, and each must be certified and dated.
The Report a Death service does the first step online. Report the death to Absa first through that service or the estates mailbox, then work through the claims and departmental contacts below.
Form 7581 is the document to ask for
Absa requires a signed instruction, Form 7581, and there are two ways to get it. Complete it at your nearest Absa branch, or request it from deceasedestates@absa.africa. Ask for it early. It is the instruction that lets the bank act, and the rest of the process waits on it.
Getting funeral costs paid from the estate
This is the part families most need and most often get wrong. Absa lists exactly what a funeral payment request must contain:
- The signed Form 7581.
- A certified and dated copy of the death certificate.
- A certified and dated copy of the deceased’s identity document.
- The funeral parlour invoice, with an email address for the parlour and a breakdown of expenses.
- A letter from the Master or Magistrate requesting funeral costs, the MBU12, bearing the Master’s stamp and date.
- A bank account confirmation letter for the funeral parlour, if the parlour’s account is not an Absa account.
Absa adds one instruction that is easy to overlook and costs time if missed: the request must be highlighted in the subject line as “Funeral/Burial order”. Put exactly that in the subject. Note the certification requirement too: copies must be certified and dated, and certifications expire, so an old certified copy may be rejected.
A funeral claim before an executor is appointed
Appointing an executor takes time, and funerals do not wait. Absa allows a funeral claim to be submitted beforehand. A nominated family member can take the documents to any Absa branch: a certified and dated copy of the death certificate, a certified and dated copy of the deceased’s identity document, and a funeral parlour invoice reflecting the parlour’s banking details. Absa says the payment takes 24 to 48 hours to reflect.
Absa life, credit protection and funeral claims
Absa publishes separate mailboxes and separate timeframes, and the difference is significant:
- Life cover: lifeclaims@absa.co.za. Absa says claims take approximately 25 working days for underwritten policies.
- Credit protection: creditlifeclaims@absa.co.za. Approximately 15 working days.
- Funeral cover: also creditlifeclaims@absa.co.za.
Twenty-five working days is five weeks, not five days. Plan around that rather than expecting a life policy to cover immediate costs.
The house and the car while the estate is wound up
Two practical matters catch executors out while an estate is being wound up.
Homeowner’s cover. Where the insurance is still required, an alternative account must be provided for the premiums. The executor or Master’s Representative contacts the HOC Department on 0860 100 876, Mondays to Fridays between 07:30 and 16:30, or emails adminhoc@absa.co.za, and submits a form to move the debit order.
A financed vehicle. Absa asks to be told where the vehicle will be kept while the estate is finalised, and states that a short-term insurance policy must be in place if the vehicle is being used during the winding-up. If the vehicle was already settled before the death, contact the AVAF Document Hub at avafadmin13@absa.co.za for the transfer of ownership documents.
Do not let cover lapse on either. An uninsured house or car in an estate is a risk carried by the beneficiaries.
Who else to notify after a death
Absa lists three parties to notify: the Department of Home Affairs, the deceased’s bank or banks, and the Master of the High Court. Home Affairs requires a death notification on the BI-1663 form, with different sections completed by different people, and issues the death certificate once registration is complete. Once the estate is reported to the Master, a Letter of Authority or Letter of Executorship is issued. If there is no will, or no executor nominated in it, a nomination can be made as part of reporting the estate.
