Absa lends across several products, and the routes to each are separate. The numbers below were read from Absa’s own website, across its product, self-service and insurance pages, on 30 August and 2 September 2026.
Task scope
There is no single Absa “loan department”. Absa publishes no general loans number and no loans email address – it routes by loan type so you reach a team that can actually see the account. Knowing that is the difference between one call and three.
Absa’s own loans page groups borrowing by purpose – for yourself, a home, a car, or studies – rather than by department.
Route
- Home loans: 0860 111 007
- Vehicle finance: 0860 669 669
- Islamic vehicle finance: 0860 000 786
- Credit cards: 0861 462 273
- Report fraud or scams: 0860 557 557
- Lost or stolen cards: 011 501 5050 or 0800 11 11 55
Absa also publishes a payment relief route for customers in difficulty, which is a separate conversation from a normal account query and is best raised before falling behind.
Requirements
Have the account or agreement number and your identity number. For vehicle finance also have the registration number and VIN; for a home loan, the property address and bond account number.
Ask for a settlement quote rather than the statement balance if you intend to settle. The two differ, and paying the balance can leave an amount outstanding that keeps the agreement – and any security over an asset – in place.
Steps
Pick the product line above, quote the agreement number, and get a reference for anything substantive. Put a payment arrangement in writing – a verbal arrangement that is not recorded on the account is the commonest cause of a later dispute.
If you are struggling to pay, make contact before you fall into arrears. Under the National Credit Act a credit provider must consider a request, and options narrow considerably once the account is in default and legal collection has begun.
Absa will not phone you to request an OTP, a PIN or a transfer to a “safe account”. Any such call is fraud – end it and dial 0860 557 557 yourself.
Escalation
Escalate in writing to the product line, quoting the reference. A loan is a credit agreement, so an unresolved dispute goes to the National Credit Regulator or the Credit Ombud rather than a banking ombud.
A banking service failure – as distinct from the credit agreement itself – goes to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. If you are over-indebted, debt review through a registered debt counsellor is a statutory option under the National Credit Act.
