Credit products covered by a Capitec agreement

  • Personal loans, which you can apply for in the app or online without visiting a branch.
  • The Access Facility, which gives revolving credit of up to R500,000.
  • The Credit Card: R100 initiation fee, R50 monthly fee, and an interest rate of 10.50% to 21.00% depending on your credit profile.
  • Home loans, and credit for vehicles, education, home improvement and medical costs.

To apply, you must be 18 or older and either permanently employed or receiving a pension. You need your original SA ID, your latest salary slip, and a bank statement showing your last 3 consecutive salary deposits. The minimum salary for a credit card is R1,800 a month. If you are self-employed or have several incomes, choose “Self Employed” as your employment type. Capitec says you could get up to R500,000 of credit.

Changing your agreement: debt rescheduling

Capitec’s debt relief page says rescheduling a loan means signing a credit contract amendment. When you reschedule:

  • There is no fee to reschedule.
  • Your monthly instalment goes down, and you repay the loan over a longer period.
  • Your interest rate stays the same, but you pay more interest in total because the term is longer.
  • You can pay less interest later by increasing your instalment when your finances improve.

You can ask to reschedule as soon as you are worried about making a repayment, or after you have missed one. Capitec asks questions to work out which rescheduling option suits you. It encourages customers to speak to it before looking at outside options, and says it can offer zero-fee personalised solutions.

When rescheduling can help

Capitec’s credit hub article on debt rescheduling suggests considering it if you lose your job or your income drops, face unexpected costs such as car repairs or medical bills, see your instalments rise with interest rates, find several debts hard to manage, or go through a big life change such as a new child or a divorce. Its advice is to review your income, expenses and debts first, then contact your credit provider as soon as you realise you cannot make a repayment. Be honest about your situation and have proof ready, such as evidence of a change in income.

Debt consolidation

Capitec’s credit hub describes debt consolidation as combining several debts into one loan with one monthly payment. The steps it gives are: list every debt with its balance, interest rate, instalment and remaining term; choose a consolidation method, such as a personal loan or a home loan; apply; and then pay off the old debts with the new loan. Capitec points out that using a home loan to consolidate risks your home if you cannot keep up the payments.

After your credit is approved

Capitec’s credit pages advise reading your credit agreement documents carefully once credit is approved. For a credit card, the minimum monthly repayment starts at 5% of the outstanding balance. Straight purchases get up to 55 days interest-free, and budget purchases can be spread over up to 48 months. Credit insurance is available if you do not have your own cover.
