Capitec lists these benefits: 1% cash back on all spending, 1GB of free Capitec Connect data each month, free delivery, interest on a positive balance, free local and international airport lounge visits, and free travel insurance of up to R5 million. Credit insurance is available if you do not have your own.
How to apply for a Capitec credit card
- You must be 18 or older, permanently employed or receiving a pension, and earn at least R1,800 a month.
- Apply online, in the Capitec app, at a branch, on 0860 66 77 89, or on WhatsApp at 067 418 9565.
- You need your original ID, your latest salary slip, and a 3-month bank statement if you do not bank with Capitec.
- If you are self-employed or have several sources of income, choose “Self Employed” as your employment type when you apply.
Credit card delivery
If you get a credit estimate online or in the app and tap “I am Interested”, an agent calls you to complete the application and asks whether you want delivery or branch collection. Delivery is free and takes 3 to 5 working days. The courier scans your SA ID, Smart ID card, driver’s licence or passport before handing over the card. To change the delivery date or time, call 0860 10 20 43. You cannot make changes after 16:00 on the day before delivery. If you choose branch collection, you cannot switch to delivery later. If someone else will accept the card, they must show their ID as well as yours.
Straight vs budget payments
Straight purchases are interest-free if you pay the full outstanding balance before your next instalment due date. Budget purchases are spread over a fixed term of up to 48 months, with fixed monthly instalments, and interest is charged until they are fully repaid. Capitec suggests budget payments for bigger purchases.
Other Capitec credit options
Capitec also offers an Access Facility of up to R500,000 in revolving credit, personal loans you can apply for in the app with no branch visit, and home loans. People who do not earn a fixed salary, including the self-employed and those with several monthly incomes, can apply for up to R500,000 of credit for personal use. Capitec’s credit pages also warn that credit enquiries can affect your credit score, and explain the difference between hard and soft enquiries.
Lost card, fraud and disputes
For a lost or stolen card, or a transaction you did not make, call 0860 10 20 43 straight away, or WhatsApp 067 418 9565. For a card purchase dispute, contact the merchant first. If the merchant will not resolve it, Capitec can process a chargeback with the merchant’s bank. Call 0860 10 20 43 or visit a branch with your supporting evidence.
