What this organisation provides
DebtSafe provides debt review, along with legal services, transfers and credit repair. It publishes a budget tool, an application form, a debt review knowledge centre and debt education material.
It screens on income and debt size before quoting. Its own quote form asks whether you earn R8,000 or more a month and owe more than R30,000 – so debt review through this firm is aimed at people above those thresholds. If you fall below them, ask what else is available rather than assuming there is nothing.
The firm offers service in eleven languages on its enquiry form, including isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi, Setswana, Sesotho, Xitsonga, siSwati, Tshivenda and isiNdebele – worth asking for if a financial conversation is easier in your own language.
Address and operating information
Administrative Hub: 42 Van Riebeeck Street, Mokopane 0601, Limpopo.
DebtSafe publishes one address, described as an administrative hub rather than a branch network – debt review is conducted remotely, so there is no local office to visit in most of the country.
Support and escalation routes
DebtSafe publishes its National Credit Regulator registration as NCRDC1078. That number matters more than anything else here: only an NCR-registered debt counsellor may place you under debt review, and you can check the number against the NCR’s public register before signing. A firm that will not give you its NCRDC number is the one to walk away from.
Two things to understand before committing. Debt review is recorded against your credit profile and you cannot take new credit while under it – that is the mechanism working, not a fault, and it is removed once you receive a clearance certificate. And debt counselling fees are capped by the NCR, so ask for the fee schedule in writing and check it against those limits.
Raise a complaint through the Client Care route first, quoting your reference and dates. If it is unresolved:
- The National Credit Regulator regulates debt counsellors and handles complaints about them
- The National Financial Ombud Scheme resolves credit and debt disputes free of charge
- The National Consumer Tribunal hears matters referred under the National Credit Act
- A personal information complaint goes to the Information Regulator
